Instant Analysis: Giants fall to Cowboys 40-37 in OT thriller

FINAL-SCORE-COWBOYS

AT A GLANCE

Fourteen penalties for 160 yards. Russell Wilson moonballs. Jaxson Dart's first NFL action. Seven second-half lead changes. Forty-one combined points in the fourth quarter. The Giants' annual trip to Dallas had a little bit of everything, but they couldn't come away with the most important thing in a 40-37 overtime loss, dropping them to 0-2 to start the season.

Wilson threw a go-ahead, 48-yard touchdown to Malik Nabers with 25 seconds left in the game. Dallas responded and set up a 64-yard field goal attempt by Brandon Aubrey, which he made as time expired to force overtime.

The Giants won the overtime coin toss and elected to play defense first. They forced Dallas to punt, setting up a score-and-win situation. After both sides punted again, Wilson tried to find Nabers deep one more time, but Donovan Wilson intercepted the pass. On the ensuing possession, Dak Prescott scrambled for 14 yards to set up Aubrey's 46-yard, game-winning field goal.

UP NEXT

After starting the season with back-to-back road games in the NFC East, the Giants (0-2) will open their 2025 home schedule with consecutive games against interconference opponents. First up is the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football. The Chiefs lost their season opener to the Los Angeles Chargers, who will travel to MetLife Stadium in Week 4.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

Andrew Thomas, the Giants' starting left tackle, has not played since he suffered a season-ending foot injury on Oct. 13, 2024. Thomas continues to do more in practice each week, including taking team reps, but was listed as doubtful on the final injury report – and ultimately ruled out on gameday – in Weeks 1 and 2.

His replacement, James Hudson III, was called for four penalties on the opening possession in Dallas and held back an otherwise promising drive.

Devin Singletary took the first carry of the game and Cam Skattebo had the second. Tyrone Tracy Jr. handled the third for nine yards before breaking a 24-yarder, but it was called back by a holding penalty on wide receiver Darius Slayton. A 10-yard run by the rookie Skattebo was then called back on a personal foul by Hudson, who followed it up with a false start. Then Russell Wilson connected with wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson for a 50-yard gain (longest of Robinson's career), minus 15 yards due to an unnecessary roughness penalty on Hudson.

In total, the Giants' first drive – which began with a negated 67-yard kickoff return due to a holding penalty and ended with a short field goal – included six penalties. It spanned 16 plays for 60 yards in just under nine minutes.

Rookie Marcus Mbow, a fifth-round pick out of Purdue who had an impressive preseason, replaced Hudson on the Giants' second drive, which began with a false start penalty on tight end Daniel Bellinger. Similarly, it ended with another short field goal and a 6-0 Giants lead.

The Giants pushed through the penalty problem and scored their first touchdown of the season on a 29-yard pass from Wilson to Malik Nabers, who made a sensational catch over two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs in the end zone with 5:37 left in the second quarter.

The Giants totaled just 231 yards in Week 1 but eclipsed that mark by halftime against the Cowboys.

Wilson completed 30 of 41 passes for a career-high 450 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and a 123.0 passer rating.

The 235 yards in the first half were the most by a Giants quarterback since Eli Manning had 236 against the Eagles on Nov. 25, 2018. Last week, Wilson completed just 45.9 percent of his passes with a 59.3 passer rating.

Robinson posted a personal-best 142 receiving yards on eight catches (17.8-yard average) and a touchdown.

Not to be outdone, Nabers finished with nine receptions for 167 yards, second-most of his career, and two touchdowns.

Despite all the yards, the Giants did struggle again in the red zone as they couldn't find the end zone on four of their five drives inside the 20.

Jaxson Dart made his NFL debut with 12:51 left in a game that had the Cowboys leading 20-16. From the Dallas 25, Dart handed the ball off to Skattebo, who burst straight up the middle for 24 yards down to the goal line. The fellow rookie then punched it in on the next play as the Giants regained a three-point lead.

After the Cowboys retook the lead, Dart returned for two more plays on the Giants' next drive. He handed the ball off to Tracy for a first down on second-and-short. Dart then lost three yards on a run. Nabers couldn't hold onto a third-and-four pass that would have provided a fresh set of downs with 2:50 left in the game. Nevertheless, on fourth-and-four, Wilson then threw a 32-yard touchdown to Robinson on the very next play to put the Giants back up by three points.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE

The Giants were down two linebackers (Micah McFadden and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles) and a defensive lineman (Rakeem Nuñez-Roches Sr.). McFadden was quickly ruled out last week after being carted off with a foot injury in the season opener. He was later placed on injured reserve. Flannigan-Fowles was also ruled out after he aggravated a calf injury in practice this week. He did not make the trip with the team to Dallas. Nuñez-Roches was doubtful with a foot injury.

Cor'Dale Flott has seemingly cemented his starting spot at cornerback opposite Paulson Adebo. Flott broke up two passes and made a critical play at the end of the first half, keeping tight end Jake Ferguson inbounds with the clocking winding down. Dak Prescott rushed everyone to the line, but CeeDee Lamb was called for a false start to end the second quarter with the Giants ahead 13-10. The Giants made a key play at a similar point in the game a week ago at Washington, where Abdul Carter forced Jayden Daniels into an intentional grounding that kept the Commanders from adding points before heading to the locker room.

The Giants had three sacks in a Week 1 game for the first time since 2011 and followed it up with three more on Sunday. Brian Burns, who had two in the opener, notched his third of the young season. Kayvon Thibodeaux also took down Dak Prescott, who entered Sunday with a 13-game winning streak over the Giants as a starter.

Nickel cornerback Dru Phillips notched the Giants' first takeaway of the season, intercepting Prescott's pass intended for Lamb on the opening drive of the second half.

Dallas took its first lead of the game on Javonte Williams' 30-yard touchdown run with 7:20 left in the third quarter. On the previous play, Phillips was called for a 22-yard passing interference penalty.

Linebacker Darius Muasau, who stepped up in place of McFadden, left in the third quarter with a concussion. Burns then played some off-ball linebacker and quickly delivered a big hit on Javonte Williams for a tackle for loss.

After the Giants regained the lead with 2:44 left, the Cowboys responded with an 11-play, 71-yard drive that ended with a go-ahead, six-yard touchdown catch by George Pickens with 52 seconds remaining.

To start overtime, the Giants forced the Cowboys to punt, setting up a score-and-win opportunity for the offense.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS

New this season, the dead ball spot of a touchback if the ball lands in the end zone and is downed in the end zone by the receiving team is now the 35-yard line (it was the 30 in 2024). The "dynamic kickoff" is designed to promote more returns and resemble a play from scrimmage. The kickoff return rate around the NFL in Week 1 (75.6 percent) more than doubled the rate from the 2024 opening slate of games (33.3 percent).

A 67-yard return by Gunner Olszewski on the opening kickoff the game was negated by a holding penalty on linebacker Swayze Bozeman, who was activated from the practice squad on Saturday.

Graham Gano made all three of his field goal attempts with a long of 38 yards. He is now 5-for-5 this season.
