Fact or Fiction: Previewing matchup vs. Jets

MARCUS-MBOW-FACT-OR-FICTION

The Giants.com crew is presented with four statements and must decide whether they are Fact or Fiction.

QB Jaxson Dart is the offensive player you're most interested to watch on Saturday against the Jets.

John Schmeelk: Fiction – I am going with offensive lineman Evan Neal. We already saw Jaxson Dart play last week, and he showed a level of competence that is the goal for rookie quarterbacks in the preseason. After missing Week 1 of the preseason, Neal practiced on Wednesday, which should give him a chance to play on Saturday. If Neal wants to play himself into a prominent role this season, the time is now. He needs to take full advantage of all his opportunities for in-game reps. There is no time to waste and I'm curious to see how well he plays at guard against a live NFL opponent.

Matt Citak: Fact – In his first taste of NFL action last weekend, Dart looked impressive. His final stats were encouraging, but more importantly, the rookie quarterback looked comfortable out there. Dart was decisive and accurate with his passes, which is not easy to do in your very first professional game. Once the regular season comes along, Dart is unlikely to see the field for a while, which makes these next two preseason games so important. I can't want to see what he can do as an encore this Saturday.

OL Marcus Mbow is the non-QB offensive player you're most interested to watch.

John Schmeelk: Fiction – I already went with Evan Neal, so there's my answer, but I will give a quick aside on Mbow here. His improvement in dealing with longer-armed, powerful rushers that like to bull rush from the start of camp to where he is today has been impressive. I would like to see that progress continue.

Matt Citak: Fact – If Dart was the most impressive rookie against the Bills, then Mbow was a close second. The fifth-round pick lined up at right tackle, then got moved to left tackle a couple of drives later, only to return to the right side. Regardless of where he played, Mbow looked strong. He was on the field for 35 pass-blocking snaps and allowed just one total pressure, according to Pro Football Focus. If Mbow can prove over these next two games that he can be relied upon right away, it would give the offensive line a significant boost heading into the regular season, especially with Andrew Thomas still on the PUP list.

CB Deonte Banks is the defensive player you're most interested to watch.

John Schmeelk: Fact – Let's hope Banks is on the field after missing Wednesday's practice. If he is, I would like to see him continue his strong play from the first preseason game. He allowed only one catch on a crossing pattern that carried him all the way across the field. I know there are some fans upset about how he played one ball down the sideline that was ruled incomplete because he did not get his head around, but the fact that Banks pressed the receiver so close to the sideline that he could not catch the ball in-bounds is indicative of a good defensive play. Let's see him go through another game.

Matt Citak: Fiction – Call it a rookie theme if you will, but the defensive player I'm most interested to watch is Abdul Carter. The No. 3 overall pick was on the field for only three pass rush snaps in the preseason opener and managed to register a pressure on each of those plays, according to PFF. He wasn't going up against backups either; Carter lined up against four-time Pro Bowl tackle Dion Dawkins on two of those snaps and 2023 second-round pick O'Cyrus Torrence on the other. We've seen Carter dominate almost every time he has stepped on the field since being drafted, and I'm interested to see if it will continue against the Jets.

RB Dante Miller is the Giants player most likely to have a Victor Cruz-like performance on Saturday night.

John Schmeelk: Fiction – I'm going to go with wide receiver Beaux Collins, who was having a strong camp before an injury kept him out of the first preseason contest. He returned to practice this week, and his combination of size, speed, and quickness should allow him to line up all over the field. If other wide receivers are hurt and can't play, he will get an opportunity to rack up the yards.

Matt Citak: Fiction – Miller was the Offensive Player of the Game in the opener, as Brian Daboll noted, and the young running back could be looking at another extended opportunity this weekend. But if we're talking about a Victor Cruz-like performance, then the most likely candidate is wide receiver Montrell Washington. The fourth-year veteran finished second behind Miller with 60 receiving yards last week as he has established a nice connection with Dart dating back to the spring. Washington showed his ability to break off a big play once he gets the ball in his hands, something I think we will see during Saturday's game.
