20 Questions in 20 Days: Rookies to watch

20-QUESTIONS-ARVELL-REESE

Giants.com is counting down the start of training camp with 20 questions in 20 days.

18) Who are the rookies to know this season?

John Schmeelk: The Giants have four rookies that could all make a pretty quick impact on this year's team. First-round picks Francis Mauigoa and Arvell Reese are both likely Week 1 starters. Mauigoa will plug in at right guard and should provide the type of mauling attitude John Harbaugh wants from his linemen. Reese will likely start next to Tremaine Edmunds, using his length and power versus the run on early downs, his wingspan and athleticism to cover, and also contribute as a blitzer or on the edge on passing downs. Both have the talent to be true impact players very quickly.

Colton Hood, a second-round pick, will compete over the summer for playing time as an outside cornerback with Greg Newsome II and Deonte Banks. He wants to press wide receivers and be physical near the line of scrimmage. Third-round pick Malachi Fields will also compete for playing time as an outside wide receiver. At 6-4 1/2 and 217 pounds, he is the team's biggest wide receiver and should be able to win down the field. He has already made a handful of incredible catches, some one-handed, during spring practice.

There's a chance sixth-round picks Jack Kelly, J.C. Davis, and Bobby Jamison-Travis could also contribute. Jamison-Travis has the best shot as a non-special teams contributor since he is an older player (25 years old) and showed the ability to stop the run in college. The Giants will have an open competition at defensive tackle this summer to fill out the depth chart.

I also want to shout out one undrafted free agent: kicker Dominic Zvada. He was more consistent as the spring went on and has a big leg that should allow him to make kicks deeper than 60 yards. He will compete with Ben Sauls for the spot.
