Lawrence Tynes has been selected as the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in the Giants' 36-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.
Tynes kicked a career-high five field goals and scored half of the Giants' points in their victory. Tynes booted field goals of 47, 49, 30, 36 and 37 yards. He is the seventh player in Giants history to kick at least five field goals in a game and the first since Jay Feely did it vs. Washington on Oct. 30, 2005. The team record of six was set by Joe Danelo at Seattle on Oct. 18, 1981.
Tynes' previous career high was four field goals on Nov. 27, 2005 for Kansas City vs. New England and Sept. 20, 2009 for the Giants at Dallas. Tynes 49-yard field was his longest since he kicked a 50-yarder vs. Green Bay on Dec. 4, 2011. Tynes kicked two field goals of at least 40 yards in a game for the first time since Oct. 10, 2010 at Houston, where he booted three-pointers of 45 and 42 yards.
This is Tynes' third Player of the Week award, though his first with the Giants. He was honored twice as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The first was in Week 7 of the 2005 season, when he kicked field goals of 30, 51 and 52 yards at Miami to join Nick Lowery as the only players in Chiefs history to produce two field goals of 50 yards in a game.
Tynes was cited a second time in Week 5 of the 2006 season, when he kicked field goals of 45, 40 and 19 yards (the latter a game-winner with 1:36 remaining) and added 2 PATs for 11 points in a Chiefs victory at Arizona.
Tynes is the second Giants player in as many weeks to receive a Player of the Week award; wide receiver Hakeem Nicks won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after catching 10 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown in the Giants' victory over Tampa Bay.
Tynes is the first Giant to win the special teams award since Dominik Hixon in Week 13 of the 2009 season and the first Giants kicker to be honored since John Carney in Week 3 in 2008.
