Calvin Austin III placed on injured reserve with torn ACL

CALVIN-AUSTIN-PRIMEPOINT

The New York Giants have placed Calvin Austin III on injured reserve, ending the veteran wide receiver's first season with the team.

Austin suffered a torn ACL during Tuesday's practice at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. The injury momentarily paused practice as coaches and teammates gathered around him to show their support.

"It's definitely impactful to our team because he was playing so well," coach John Harbaugh said. "He was doing a great job across the board, offense and special teams. He had definitely carved out a role for us on our team, and then to see that happen, especially just a non-contact type of an injury, it's just kind of shocking to see. So, you feel bad for him. I mean, that's the biggest thing. He and I were texting last night and even more this morning, so I think he's in a better place now than he was yesterday. But it's going to be a long road back, but he'll get back. He'll get back, and we'll be behind him the whole way."

Austin did a little bit of everything during Saturday's preseason win in Miami. He returned two punts for 29 yards, caught two passes for 24 yards, and gained another 21 yards on the ground.

Originally a fourth-round draft choice by Pittsburgh in 2022, Austin played in 48 regular-season games (16 starts) for the Steelers and amassed 84 catches for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns. He also has 11 rushing attempts for 57 yards and another score.

The 5-foot-9, 162-pounder is also a seasoned punt returner with a 73-yard touchdown, which he scored against the Giants in 2024, among his 72 career attempts. That year, he was the only player in the NFL with a touchdown reception of at least 50 yards and punt return touchdown of at least 70 yards.

Prior to the NFL, Austin finished his college career second all-time in Memphis history in receiving touchdowns, fourth in receiving yards, and fifth in receptions.

He will be missed, but the nature of the NFL is finding the next man up.

"It would be a disservice to him if I said it wasn't a blow," offensive coordinator MattNagy said. "It would be a blow. But I think the beautiful part of what Harbs has done with us as a staff and as a team, his message this whole time has been positivity of understanding that the next guy has got to step up and play. And everyone says that, but that's what's real. And so, we feel like we have a great amount of competition and depth here. And the next guy has got to do that. And so, if it does go that route, that's a part of football. It happens across the league and it sucks, but that's what's real. So, we've just got to be able to step up and adjust from it."

The Giants wrap up the preseason on Friday night against the Jets. Two days later, the 53-man roster must be finalized.

The other wide receivers on the roster are Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, rookie Malachi Fields, Odell Beckham Jr., Dalen Cambre, Braxton Berrios, Isaiah Hodgins, Jalin Hyatt, Xavier Gipson and Kobe Prentice. On Monday, the Giants waived Ryan Miller.
