The New York Giants (2-6) host the San Francisco 49ers (5-3) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
San Francisco, which fell to Houston last week, has alternated losses and wins since starting the season 3-0. While we await word on the 49ers' quarterback situation, coach Brian Daboll met with the media before Wednesday's practice in East Rutherford. Here is everything you need to know:
📰 Cornerback Rico Payton, who was claimed off waivers from the Saints the day after 53-man roster reductions in late August, has been designated for return from injured reserve and will begin practicing. Payton, 6-foot and 182 pounds, signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburg State (Kan.) in 2024. In 16 games as a rookie, he racked up 13 special teams tackles (10 solo) and broke up a pass.
📰 The following players will not practice today: right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (pec), wide receiver Jalin Hyatt (wisdom teeth, expected back tomorrow), tight end Daniel Bellinger (neck), defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (neck), and cornerbacks Cor'Dale Flott (concussion protocol) and Art Green (hamstring).
📰 Daboll doesn't think Eluemunor's pectoral injury is a long-term concern, but "it's not good enough to practice today." It is not a torn pec.
📰 Running back Cam Skattebo, who underwent successful surgery on his dislocated ankle Sunday night at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Presbyterian campus, was discharged from the hospital Monday and will begin rehab immediately. No further surgery is required, Daboll said.
📰 Skattebo has been at the facility and in team meetings.
📰 Safety Jevón Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo, who missed last week with knee injuries, will be at practice. "We'll see how much they do."
📰 The Giants will have to "evaluate both" Mac Jones and Brock Purdy, who has been out with a toe injury. "I think Coach [Kyle] Shanahan has run his system for a long time. Mac's done a good job replacing Brock. Brock has obviously done a good job since he's been there. Again, there's so much to prepare for relative to the different things that they do. You just study both guys. The system is pretty expansive. They do a lot of the things that are difficult to defend."
📰 The game plan starts with Christian McCaffrey, who can do pretty much everything. "I'm sure they'll look at a lot of things that have happened over the last couple weeks in terms of running the ball or matchup-wise with him."
📰 Daboll said Robert Saleh, the former Jets head coach who is in his second stint as defensive coordinator in San Francisco, does a "tremendous job." The 49ers are particularly dangerous at punching the ball out. "It's the all gas, no brake style, if you will. I've known Coach Saleh for a long time, and I just think he's a really good football coach. Those guys play hard. His fingerprints are all over it."
📰 Daboll doesn't "really anticipate" San Francisco "sitting back" just to take away scramble lanes for Jaxson Dart. "Again, there's lanes outside. Keep your eyes downfield. Scramble rules. There's a lot of quarterbacks that can scramble in this league with their legs. You try to do a variety of things against them. If it's there and he's got an opportunity to do it, he should do it. If not, we've got to do a good job of scramble rules, keeping our eyes downfield, becoming available for him as a passer when he's like the one to (wide receivers) Wan'Dale (Robinson) in Denver. There's plenty of them. Just play the game."
