Giants earn PFF's O-line of the Week
The Giants put together a dominant overall performance against the Dolphins over the weekend as they emerged from Miami with a 26-3 victory.
Following the completion of the second week of the preseason, Pro Football Focus handed out their weekly awards.
When it came to the Offensive Line of the Week, that honor went to the Giants.
"The Giants' offensive line surrendered four pressures in this game, but none of them came from the five players who started it," wrote PFF's Gordon McGuinness. "J.C. Davis played 81 snaps at left tackle and didn't give up a pressure from 46 pass-blocking snaps."
Davis finished as the Giants' highest-ranked player on offense after he went the entire game at left tackle without allowing a single pressure.
"Guys aren't asked to do that very often and he did it and it was a goal – going into the week, we decided to see – to put him into that situation to see how he handled it and also to help him grow into the ability to do it," coach John Harbaugh said to the media Sunday about the rookie sixth-round pick. "Can you play a whole game at left tackle in the National Football League? Preseason game, albeit, but still a game. And he did it, he did it well. He had a lot of plus plays, he graded out very well and that's a big step in his development for sure. Also in us gaining confidence in his ability to go in there and do good things in a game."
In addition to the unit's strong performance in pass protection, the O-line also performed well in the run game. Taking out the three kneel downs at the end of the fourth quarter, the Giants rushed the ball 33 times for 136 yards, good for an average of 4.1 yards per carry, and two touchdowns.
PFF highlighted Davis' play against the Dolphins, but he was far from the only lineman that stepped up in Miami.
After the rookie, the next five highest-ranked offensive players on the Giants all came from the unit up front - Aaron Stinnie, Marcus Mbow, Lucas Patrick, Jon Runyan and John Michael Schmitz.
The Giants made a trade last week, sending offensive lineman Daniel Faalele to the Jaguars for a 2027 sixth-round pick. When asked about it on Monday, Harbaugh noted the confidence they have in all of the players in the OL room as a big reason why the team felt comfortable making the deal.
"I think it says we feel good about our depth, for sure," the head coach said about the trade. "We do feel good about our depth on the offensive line generally and inside. And it's not too often you get a trade like that. You know, it's not too often you can trade a player for a sixth-round pick in the middle of training camp. But sometimes teams have needs, and Daniel's started many games in the National Football League, so they felt like that was valuable for them. With us, Daniel was doing well for the role he was going to be playing, and yet we have other guys that were doing well, too."
