Rolle got back to his ball hawking ways on Sunday.
A jack-of-all-trades since coming to the Giants in 2010, the safety had just three of his 15 career interceptions in a Giants uniform entering Week 6 of his third season with the team. He increased that total with two picks of 49ers quarterback Alex Smith en route to the Giants' victory in Candlestick Park.
"It's a good day because I was itching for one and I was due," said Rolle, whose last interception came in the 2011 regular season finale against Dallas. "And God willing, I was able to capture the opportunity when it presented itself. It's a team effort. It's a team effort. The guys in front got after him a little bit, and I was able to disguise along with [safety] Stevie Brown, and I was fortunate enough to make those plays."
In part due to a pass rush that netted six sacks, Rolle posted the third multi-interception game of his career. He notched a career-best three against Cincinnati in 2007 and two against St. Louis that same year – both games while he was playing for the Cardinals.
On Sunday, Rolle's two interceptions were separated by 2:17 off the clock in the third quarter. He returned the first one 20 yards and the second 22 yards, and both led to Lawrence Tynes field goals. The second one gave the Giants a 23-3 lead with 6:13 left in the quarter.
Rolle wasn't the only defensive back to get his hands on the ball. Prince Amukamara grabbed his own early in the second quarter. It started a three-interception day for Smith, who had thrown just one this season after tossing just five in all of 2011. Smith also entered Week 6 with the No. 1 passer rating in the NFL at 108.7. In Sunday's game, he had a 43.1 rating.
"First and foremost, I understand what we have on our defensive unit," Rolle said. "We might not play the best of the best football at all times, but we still are a great football unit. And more importantly, we trust in our coaches, we trust in our job, and we trust in each other as men."
