Sideline View: Practice observations (4/25)

Giants.com brings you practice notes and observations straight from the sidelines:

Day Two of voluntary veteran minicamp is in the books. Here's what I spied from the sideline:

• Keeon Johnson, who did a nice job in camp last year before getting hurt, made a nice leaping grab of a Davis Webb pass and got his feet in on the sideline before going out of bounds. Hunter Sharp made a great catch of his own, going high in front of Jeremiah McKinnon. McKinnon bounced back in the next session, knocking a pass away intended for Kalif Raymond.

• Janoris Jenkins has shown consistent ability to mirror his receivers, and it showed when he got his hand in front of Roger Lewis, knocking a ball away. Lewis would catch one in front of Eli Apple later in practice. Apple and Cody Latimer was a good matchup throughout the day.

• As I said yesterday, far too much is being read into the quarterback performances in an unpadded practice in April when the team has had only two weeks with a playbook. For another practice, the quarterbacks had some ups and downs with some errant tosses and a few that were on target down the field. Webb has great zip on the ball and Eli looks like Eli. None of this should be surprising to anyone who watched the duo practice last year.

•  You know James Bettcher's defense is going to feature a lot of pressure packages when you are working on them in the second practice of the year in voluntary minicamp. We saw a number of different blitzes. The Cardinals did a lot of exotic things with their blitzes the last couple of years.

•  The running backs did a nice job in blitz pickup during the period and seemed to be in the right spot at the right time.

•  Don't expect to see Olivier Vernon in coverage much (Chandler Jones didn't cover much in Arizona last year), but he did a nice job chasing Johnathan Stewart into the flat after a short gain on a catch.

•  In 7-on-7, I saw a lot of empty backfield with the running back (Wayne Gallman more than others) split out wide or in the slot to try to get matchups against opposing linebackers. There are running backs in the draft that have the skillset to do that as well.

•  Evan Engram showed his athleticism and made a nice jumping catch on a pass down the seam from Eli.

•  Davis Webb was showing off his arm strength throughout practice. He was a little too strong on a deep post to Hunter Sharp, but a few plays later he fired a ball on a line (and on the mark) to Raymond in the slot that the wide receiver couldn't come up with.

•  Jerell Adams continued to have a nice camp with a couple catches on passes from Davis Webb. After both plays, Webb ran all the way from the end zone to congratulate the tight end. There was good enthusiasm on both sides of the ball.

The Giants take the field for the second day of voluntary minicamp!
