Snap Counts: Week 2 usage & takeaways

BRIAN-BURNS

The Giants traveled to Dallas in Week 2 for the second of back-to-back matchups against NFC East opponents. Big Blue will welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to MetLife Stadium this Sunday night for the home opener.

Here are snap counts from Week 2:

Quarterbacks

  • Russell Wilson - 64 offensive snaps (95.5 percent)
  • Jaxson Dart - 3 offensive snaps (4.5 percent)

Wilson put together one of the best games of his illustrious career on Sunday as he completed 30 of 41 pass attempts (73.2 percent) for 450 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a quarterback rating of 123.0. It was the second-most passing yards of his career and tied for the fourth-highest total in franchise history. He also added 23 yards on three rush attempts (7.7 avg.). Dart took the first three snaps of his NFL career, all of which were read options.

Running Backs

  • Cam Skattebo - 35 offensive snaps, 8 special teams snaps (52.2 percent, 21.1 percent)
  • Tyrone Tracy Jr. - 28 offensive snaps, 7 special teams snaps (41.8 percent, 18.4 percent)
  • Devin Singletary - 4 offensive snaps (6.0 percent)

Skattebo not only led the backfield in snaps, but he also led the group in touches and yards. The rookie carried the ball 11 times for 45 yards (4.1-yard average) and his first career touchdown while adding two receptions for 14 yards. Pro Football Focus had Skattebo down for three missed tackles forced. Tracy had five rush attempts for 15 yards, but made more of an impact in the passing game where he caught four passes for 36 yards. Tracy also played a big role on special teams with five kickoff returns for 132 yards (26.4-yard average).

Wide Receivers

  • Malik Nabers - 66 offensive snaps (98.5 percent)
  • Darius Slayton - 66 offensive snaps (98.5 percent)
  • Wan'Dale Robinson - 47 offensive snaps (70.1 percent)
  • Beaux Collins - 20 special teams snaps (52.6 percent)
  • Gunner Olszewski - 11 special teams snaps (28.9 percent)

The Giants' top three receivers were the only wideouts to play on offense in Week 2. The trio accounted for 370 of Wilson's 450 passing yards, with Nabers (167 yards on nine receptions) and Robinson (142 yards on eight receptions) becoming just the fourth Giants duo to record 140+ receiving yards in the same game and the first since 2018. Slayton added 61 yards on two receptions, including a game-high 52-yard catch. Olszewski only played special teams, where he returned the opening kickoff for 67 yards, although it was called back due to a holding penalty. He finished the game with one kickoff return for 29 yards and three punt returns for 38 yards (12.7-yard average).

Tight Ends

  • Theo Johnson - 56 offensive snaps (83.6 percent)
  • Daniel Bellinger - 19 offensive snaps, 20 special teams snaps (28.4 percent, 52.6 percent)
  • Chris Manhertz - 14 offensive snaps, 17 special teams snaps (20.9 percent, 44.7 percent)

Johnson had a nice bounce back performance against the Cowboys with four receptions for 34 yards. His five targets were tied with Tracy for the third-most on the team. Meanwhile, Bellinger and Manhertz both played more snaps on special teams than on offense.

Offensive Linemen

  • Jermaine Eluemunor - 67 offensive snaps, 7 special teams snaps (100 percent, 18.4 percent)
  • Greg Van Roten - 67 offensive snaps, 5 special teams snaps (100 percent, 13.2 percent)
  • Jon Runyan Jr. - 67 offensive snaps, 2 special teams snaps (100 percent, 5.3 percent)
  • John Michael Schmitz Jr. - 67 offensive snaps (100 percent)
  • Marcus Mbow - 51 offensive snaps (76.1 percent)
  • James Hudson III - 16 offensive snaps, 7 special teams snaps (23.9 percent, 18.4 percent)
  • Aaron Stinnie - 7 special teams snaps (18.4 percent)
  • Austin Schlottmann - 7 special teams snaps (18.8 percent)

The offensive line took a step forward from last week, especially when it came to pass protection. Wilson was sacked three times, although one was a backwards fumble that ended up being credited as a sack. Wilson was given a lot more time to throw, with 25 of his pass attempts occurring in over 2.5 seconds, which led to 17 of 25 passing for 365 yards and three touchdowns. The biggest change was Mbow coming in for Hudson after the team's first offensive possession. The rookie fifth-round pick played every snap at left tackle following that drive and finished the game with only two total pressures allowed (zero sacks). As a unit, the O-line was credited with just nine total pressures allowed, according to PFF.

Defensive Linemen

  • Dexter Lawrence II - 62 defensive snaps, 3 special teams snaps (69.7 percent, 7.9 percent)
  • Roy Robertson-Harris - 45 defensive snaps, 8 special teams snaps (50.6 percent, 21.1 percent)
  • Chauncey Golston - 21 defensive snaps, 28 special teams snaps (23.6 percent, 73.7 percent)

  • Elijah Garcia - 19 defensive snaps, 8 special teams snaps (21.3 percent, 21.1 percent)
  • Darius Alexander - 15 defensive snaps

Lawrence led the defensive linemen with 62 defensive snaps in Week 2, followed by Robertson-Harris' 45 snaps. With Rakeem Nunez-Roches inactive, Golston, Davidson and Garcia all saw more snaps on defense than in the season opener. Alexander also made his NFL debut and was on the field for 15 snaps.

Linebackers

  • Bobby Okereke - 87 defensive snaps, 8 special teams snaps (97.8 percent, 21.1 percent)
  • Brian Burns - 72 defensive snaps, 2 special teams snaps (80.9 percent, 5.3 percent)
  • Abdul Carter - 67 defensive snaps, 4 special teams snaps (75.3 percent, 10.5 percent)
  • Kayvon Thibodeaux - 62 defensive snaps, 8 special teams snaps (69.7 percent, 21.1 percent)
  • Darius Muasau - 23 defensive snaps, 2 special teams snaps (25.8 percent, 5.3 percent)
  • Chris Board - 14 defensive snaps, 26 special teams snaps (15.7 percent, 68.4 percent)
  • Swayze Bozeman - 5 defensive snaps, 24 special teams snaps (5.6 percent, 63.2 percent)

The Giants continued to deploy a rotation for their top edge rushers, although all three players saw a significant uptick in defensive snaps compared to last week. Burns led the group with 72 defensive snaps, which resulted in one sack, his third sack of the season, along with two tackles for loss and one pass breakup. Thibodeaux had one sack and two quarterback hits on his 62 defensive snaps, while Carter picked up one quarterback hit. The three players combined for 14 pressures, according to PFF. At inside linebacker, Okereke played almost every snap and had 10 total tackles, one pass breakup and one quarterback hit. But the spot next to him saw several players rotate in as both Muasau (concussion) and Board (chest) left the game early due to injuries, which led to Bozeman seeing his first game action as a Giant.

Defensive Backs

  • Tyler Nubin - 89 defensive snaps, 17 special teams snaps (100 percent, 44.7 percent)
  • Jevón Holland - 89 defensive snaps, 9 special teams snaps (100 percent, 23.7 percent)
  • Paulson Adebo - 89 defensive snaps (100 percent)
  • Dru Phillips - 71 defensive snaps (79.8 percent)
  • Cor'Dale Flott - 59 defensive snaps (66.3 percent)
  • Dane Belton - 38 defensive snaps, 31 special teams snaps (42.7 percent, 81.6 percent)
  • Deonte Banks - 33 defensive snaps, 12 special teams snaps (37.1 percent, 31.6 percent)
  • Art Green - 31 special teams snaps (81.6 percent)
  • Nic Jones - 16 special teams snaps (42.1 percent)
  • Beau Brade - 14 special teams snaps (36.8 percent)

Nubin's total snap count ended at 106, an impressive number, while Holland's was not far behind at 98. Adebo played every defensive snap and finished with a game-high 13 tackles (11 solo) and one pass breakup. Phillips was second on the team with 11 tackles (eight solo), including one tackle for loss, and two pass breakups, including the team's first interception of the season. Flott once again led the CB2 platoon with 59 defensive snaps compared to 33 for Banks, but both came up with some big plays, Flott had two passes defensed while Banks had two tackles for loss. Belton played 38 snaps on defense in addition to tying for the most special teams snaps with 31. Green, Jones and Brade only took the field on special teams snaps.

Specialists

  • Graham Gano - 16 special teams snaps (42.1 percent)
  • Jamie Gillan - 10 special teams snaps (26.3 percent)
  • Casey Kreiter - 10 special teams snaps (26.3 percent)

Gano connected on all seven of his attempts (three field goals, four extra points). Meanwhile, Gillan punted three times for 135 yards (45.0-yard average).
