The first day of free agency, the draft, the start of organized team activities … the pads coming on at training camp.

There are certain dates circled on every NFL club's calendar, and the New York Giants checked off another one on Monday. The team practiced in full pads for the first time this season, taking training camp to another level with the first preseason game just 10 days away.

"It's all about fundamentals right now: leverage, hand placement, ability to separate when you're getting grabbed and held," coach Brian Daboll said before practice. "We're allowing more things at practice: picks and twists up front, power rushes, attacking the defensive linemen when they jump up … different things we're allowing. This is where the game is played."

The Giants put on the pads for the first time this season as training camp ramps up.

Here are the highlights from the first day in pads:

TOUCHDOWNS

*One-on-one drills are always must-see with the pads on. During today's period between the defensive backs and receivers, Daniel Jones hit rookie Wan'Dale Robinson for a touchdown. It was a continuation of what they started to build in the Spring, when the second-round pick was a frequent target of Jones. It was also the first of a handful of nice plays from Robinson on Monday.

*All three quarterbacks got on the board in this session. Tyrod Taylor, who also ran in a touchdown later during team drills, found Richie James, who made a an over-the-shoulder catch for a score. Davis Webb then threw a touchdown pass to Marcus Kemp, who was among four newcomers the day the veterans reported for camp. Kemp, 6-4 and 210 pounds, entered the NFL from Hawaii as an undrafted free agent with the Chiefs in 2017. He has played in 44 regular-season and eight postseason games, all but one of them for Kansas City.

TAKEAWAYS

*Despite cornerback Darnay Holmes' valiant attempts to build on his interception total this summer, the offense was clean in the turnover department.

TOP PLAYS

*Wide receiver Kadarius Toney made a few nifty moves in one-on-one drills to get open and connect with Jones. Kenny Golladay also made a tough catch during this session. Cornerback Adoree' Jackson then scored one for the defense and forced an incompletion to round out the one-on-ones.

*Today was the best look at the run game of the Daboll Era. Saquon Barkley, Matt Breida, and Gary Brightwell all broke long runs to the delight of the fans attending camp. On the other side, rookie linebacker Micah McFadden and veteran defensive tackle Justin Ellis had a few noticeable run stuffs.

*Defensive end Ryder Anderson batted a pass in the middle of a scrum at the line of scrimmage.

*Safety Xavier McKinney found his way into the backfield on back-to-back plays, a common refrain as long as Wink Martindale is running the defense.

*Wide receiver C.J. Board went up and made a leaping catch on a pass from Taylor.

*Safety Julian Love broke up a pass on a bang-bang play from inside the five-yard line.
