Cover 3: Favorite Giants training camp memory

The Giants.com crew members discuss their favorite training camp memories.

John Schmeelk (first training camp: 2007): There are many training camp stories I would love to tell, but I am not at liberty to divulge certain things. What happens in Albany, stays in Albany after all.

Most of my training camp memories are experiences that I had with the people that I work with. Whether it was basketball or touch football games at the end of the workday, or nights out to nearby establishments, or just fun moments in the racquetball courts where we set up our production offices. We would ride our bikes to and from the dorms to the practice facility. It's truly what made training camp on the road special. We were all away from home with really nothing to do but work and hang out with each other.

I imagine it's the same for the players, which is why coaches for so many years liked to take their teams away from their home areas for training camp. Is it inconvenient? Sure. My wife is not thrilled I will be in West Virginia for 10 days and she will be alone with the kids. I imagine Dan would say the same thing. Older players with families are dealing with the same stuff. But there is a different feeling walking away from a camp away from home versus what is done at the team's home facility. You bond more.

Is it better for the team? Who knows, but it is different. I'm looking forward to experiencing it again even though I will be away from home for so long, including for my daughter's ninth birthday, for which I am already catching heat. Again, I'm sure many of the older players with kids have similar challenges.

Apologies for the tangent. If I wanted to focus on news stories I would have to go back to Michael Strahan's decision not to go to camp in 2007. The 2011 camp was unique because it was held at the Giants' new practice facility for the first time because the lockout didn't resolve itself until the summer, leaving little time for planning.

The day I always remembered from camp in Albany was arrival day, when the media gathered at the dorms and interviewed the players as they moved in. A few players always showed up with custom cars that drew a lot of attention, with Michael Jennings standing out as the star of that exhibition.

For some reason I remember the days when there were lightning warnings and Tom Coughlin had to do walkthroughs in the gym. He got so angry because he lost practice time and was always particularly ornery those days.

There were always autograph seekers on campus, and on many occasions, I got confused for Jeff Feagles from a distance, which was depressing for me given he was a decade older than I was. It's a bald thing.

I look forward to whole new set of memories in West Virgina.

Dan Salomone (first training camp: 2010): As Nilay Shah, now our senior vice president of marketing and brand strategy, liked to point out, I would jump from covering high school swimming in Connecticut one day to the Giants the next during my intern year. Needless to say, I was thrown in the deep end.

I joined in between the two Super Bowl titles of that era, which coincided with the opening of the new stadium and the early days of the practice facility. But my real initiation occurred 150 miles north in Albany.

You quickly learned who was in charge: Tom Coughlin.

No one had to say anything. You just learned it through osmosis with staff members who had been there five, 10, 15+ years. Now I'm one of them, and that first training camp experience is still a vivid memory.

Looking back, you appreciate how special that group was, from Coughlin to the player leadership to the assistant coaches. Everyone was there for the same goal, they knew what it took, and they achieved it (again) the following season.

Matt Citak (first training camp: 2019): Unlike John and Dan, I began working for the Giants after training camp in Albany had come to an end. My first season was in 2019, so unfortunately I was not around for the Tom Coughlin days or the bulk of Eli Manning's career. However, there certainly have been some fond training camp memories over the last seven seasons.

My first training camp working for the team coincided with Manning's final season. It was truly awesome getting to see the franchise legend, and someone I looked up to throughout my childhood as a lifelong Giants fan, go about his business on a daily basis before he hung up his cleats. I may have also witnessed firsthand one of the notorious Eli pranks that have long been talked about, but I'm not going to go into detail on that one. As he was preparing for what would end up being his final NFL season, Manning was also helping mentor a young rookie in the quarterback room in Daniel Jones. While I only got a front row seat to his 16th and final season as a Giant, I will always cherish those memories from my first training camp.

In recent years, my favorite part of training camp has been the inclusion of former Giants at practice. Michael Strahan, Lawrence Taylor, Tom Coughlin, Justin Tuck, Ottis Anderson, Osi Umenyiora, Joe Morris, Rodney Hampton, Victor Cruz, Leonard Marshall, and Ahmad Bradshaw are just some of the former players that have returned to East Rutherford to take in a practice and address the team in some capacity. The franchise has an illustrious history, and it's been awesome to see current players and coaches appreciate the accomplishments of those that came before them.

This year's training camp is going to be very different from my previous seven, of course, as we will be down in West Virginia for nearly two weeks. It will serve as a nice opportunity for the players and coaches to make some memories, but also for those of us on the staff. Between John and Dan, I have a feeling my time at The Greenbrier is going to consist of way too much discussion about the Knicks and Ohio State.

I can't wait.
