The Giants.com crew members give their biggest takeaways from West Virginia as training camp shifts back to East Rutherford.
John Schmeelk: Heading into camp, we spoke about some of the major competitions that would be taking place that would help form the Giants' depth chart in 2026. One of the major competitions we have spoken about a lot has been at cornerback. I would love to sit here and write about all the answers we have after 10 practices in West Virginia, but I would be lying to you.
From the outside looking in, it seems like the competition is still wide open. Different players are still getting reps with different units. John Harbaugh has stated competitions will be taking place through the preseason games, so it will be important to continue to view how things play out over the coming week.
All the cornerbacks have made plays at different times and shown reasons for optimism. The games and practices moving forward will matter so it will be important to watch it all closely moving forward.
"Like I said before, I like all of our corners," Harbaugh said on the final day in West Virginia. "I think the fact that you can even be talking about competition is great, especially at that position because there's not too many teams that can have that conversation, really. So, to me, it makes everybody better. I'm looking forward to next week, obviously. But then when the games come, I'm looking forward to seeing how guys look against another team and get a better feel for where you're at."

Dan Salomone: Football teams only do things if they think it can help them win some games. So, the question coming back from West Virginia was if the stay at The Greenbrier put the Giants in better position to do just that. "Definitely," the head coach said after the first practice back in East Rutherford.
"We have a chance to be a good football team," Harbaugh said. "We're doing a lot of good things right now. Where do we go? This week we told the guys the focus this week is all the execution things for sure, but the focus this week is technique. From now until Saturday, our individual focus is on your technique. All the little things to make you successful. Even at the end of practice when you're dead tired, that's a fourth quarter, win the game type drill and you're down by 14. Okay? That's focus on your technique. Because if your technique is good, you can win the battle of fatigue. And that's what we're working on. So, I think that set us up for that. Now go forward this week and do that same idea."
Now, being "in position" and actually doing something are two very different things in the NFL. The latter won't be proven until Sept. 13 and beyond.
Meanwhile, the Giants returned to a facility under further construction as renovations picked up steam.
"I can't sit here and lie to you and say it doesn't [impact team operations]," Harbaugh said. "It does. It's not Taj Mahal over there. We have to make it better. It's as good as we could do right now, but you kind of learn real quick what you need. The thing I really appreciate about the organization is that the ownership here will do whatever it takes. The fields are a good example. The fields were playing poorly in the spring. They went to work on the fields. We actually hired somebody, too. And the fields played great today. They were great. It was a major improvement.
"So, we're going to be in here for probably two seasons so they can build this over here. It's going to be incredible. But that's where we're going to be operating on it. So, we have a lot of work to do to make that better. But the players didn't bat an eye. They understand the circumstances. And it's gritty. So, maybe it's just what we needed. Maybe God said, 'I need you to be a little grittier as a football team, so we're going to put you in this park over here.'"
The New York Giants announced plans to expand and transform their team headquarters, anchored by a new and modern football-focused facility designed to elevate player performance, preparation, and recovery.

Matt Citak: Schmeelk touched on one of the big training camp competitions to watch at the cornerback position, so I'll take the other intriguing one. And it happens to be at the position that lines up opposite the corners – the wide receivers.
The team's WR depth chart has been a topic of conversation throughout the offseason. The addition of veterans Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster and Braxton Berrios back in June elevated those discussions even more. Similar to the rotation we saw at the cornerback spot, each of the wide receivers caught passes from all three quarterbacks during team drills in West Virginia. Almost all of the wideouts on the roster had their respective moments while at The Greenbrier, so this competition will be one to watch as we get further along in August.
"Always going to continue to build as much competition and depth as we can and signing those three players who have all been successful in the league and have skins on the wall," general manager Joe Schoen told the media on the first day of training camp about the three veteran additions. "And Braxton brings a return element to it. So, again, more depth, more competition. All three of those guys came in, they were in shape and had good springs. And then, yeah, now you bring Malik (Nabers) back, you bring back (Darius) Slayton, you added Malachi (Fields). So, I mean, that's going to be a position group that I'm excited to see how it plays out here throughout camp."
Speaking of Nabers, that is the other big takeaway from our time in West Virginia. While he has yet to participate in team drills, Nabers has been out on the practice field for individuals. The 23-year-old has been running and making cuts, and his progress this month will be one to monitor as we inch closer to the start of the season.
"He is pouring himself into it with everything he's got," Harbaugh said last week about the third-year receiver. "Learn the offense. Know what he's doing. Because he knows he's going to be back playing soon. How soon? That depends. We'll see. But he's preparing himself to have a great season, so I'm excited about that."
