Wan'Dale Robinson's career day in Dallas was a result of what happened over the offseason in San Diego and Atlanta.
Russell Wilson, fresh off signing with the Giants, gathered the receivers and tight ends for throwing sessions that doubled as bonding trips with his new teammates. Robinson was among them. He was coming off a career year in which he had 93 receptions, fifth-most in 100 seasons of the New York Football Giants, but they amounted to 699 yards, with only two going for 25 yards or more.
The 5-foot-8, 185-pound Robinson had three such explosive plays this past Sunday alone as part of a personal-best 142 receiving yards, which was also his first 100-yard game since he tore his ACL in the middle of his 2022 rookie season.
"Obviously coming out of college, I've been down the field and doing things like that and obviously just waiting for my opportunity to showcase here. [Sunday] was that day," Robinson said. "From the moment that Russ got here, he was like, 'Dude, I know you can get down the field. I've seen it.' We worked out together and he was like, 'I didn't even know you could run that well just from watching the tape from previous games.' So, he was like, 'We're going to make sure that this gets going.' Just from the work all the way through the spring to the summer and camp and obviously through practice weeks, just making sure we're on the same page. We saw that there were some holes in the defense that they were playing and being able to get down the middle."
Robinson also helped open things up for Malik Nabers and vice versa. They became just the fourth duo in Giants history to record at least 140 receiving yards in the same game.
The others were Hakeem Nicks (199) and Victor Cruz (179) in 2012 vs. Tampa Bay; Sterling Shepard (167) and Odell Beckham Jr. (143) in 2018 vs. Atlanta; and Beckham (185) and Rueben Randle (158) in 2014 vs. Philadelphia.
"Wan'Dale, he helps me just by – we help each other," said Nabers, who caught nine passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns in a game that will be remembered for a long time in New York and Dallas. "All receivers help each other, (Darius Slayton) Slay also. The ball hasn't been finding Slay, but he does a tremendous job of keeping us uplifted, continuing to get open in his routes. Wan'Dale helps me just by making a lot of plays, getting him the ball. Giving him the ball in space helps space the defense out so we can run the ball, and also take a lot of people off of me. I get bracketed sometimes, I get Tampa 2, so finding another guy in there that can do a lot of things, get some yards, it helps even the offense, balance the offense."
Make no mistake, though. Robinson is still there to make those tough catches in tight spaces, often putting his body in harm's way.
Since the start of last season, Robinson leads the NFL with 43 catches on third down. The next closest is All-Pro Amon-Ra St. Brown with 34.
"I've always wanted to be a quarterback's best friend in that sort of way on third down that they know I'm going to be available, I'm going to be open and there's always going to be somebody there that's going to catch that ball," Robinson said. "And obviously Malik, he's going to get doubled a lot of times too, so that gives me opportunities to have singles. So just making sure I'm going out there winning my one-on-ones and just always available for the quarterback."
In Seattle, Wilson had another best friend who reminds him of Robinson.
"He reminds me a lot of Tyler Lockett," Wilson said of the 5-foot-10, 185-pound veteran who is second only to Hall of Famer Steve Largent in Seahawks history in all the major receiving categories. "I think Tyler was a guy who loved the game, saw the game well and had a great feel for space. Tyler's one of my favorite all-time people and also one of my favorite guys I've ever gotten to play with. I remember going to Tyler's wedding and just the closeness of that. I think Wan'Dale has a very similar nature in terms of his love for his teammates, his love for the game, the experience that he's getting every day being out there. I think that's pretty cool to see."
But you won't catch Robinson doing one thing.
"I don't slide for sure whenever I get the ball like Tyler," Robinson said with a laugh. "My dad would probably scream at me if I did that. But yeah, I definitely see some similarities, being able to get open against zone and man and just being a friendly target for the quarterback at all times."
