Touchdowns & top plays from Wednesday's action

ISAIAH-LIKELY-TICKETMASTER

Football is close enough to feel it.

With the preseason opener days away, the Giants inched even closer with a game-like situation to end Wednesday's practice. John Harbaugh put 10 minutes on the scoreboard with a tie game, and the head coach told the team to play it out essentially like a scrimmage.

After trading a few punts, it ended with a 62-yard field goal attempt by Dominic Zvada. And the undrafted rookie, who is competing with returnee Ben Sauls for the Giants' kicking job, made it.

"I thought he was going to make it," Harbaugh said.

The head coach added that assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Chris Horton told him that 42 was the line of scrimmage threshold. It turned out to be the 44 – and possibly more.

"So I had to give him a hard time after that," Harbaugh joked. "So, it was actually a little further back and it was a great kick, great snap, nice to see. It was exciting. It's fun."

Here are the touchdowns, takeaways, and top plays from the rest of practice:

Touchdowns

The Giants ran 2-on-2 drills between receivers and defensive backs early in practice. Calvin Austin III and rookie Malachi Fields ran a nice route combination that sprung the former open for a touchdown from Jameis Winston.

During an 11-on-11 period in the red zone, Jaxson Dart threw a goal-line touchdown to fullback Patrick Ricard and then another to Fields. Winston then connected with wide receiver Dalen Cambre for a score.

In 7-on-7 drills, Brandon Allen threw a pass through traffic to wide receiver Xavier Gipson, who then walked in for a touchdown.

Inside stuff

Tremaine Edmunds, a lengthy two-time Pro Bowl linebacker who signed with the Giants this offseason, came out hot to start the team portion of practice. He nearly had a pick-six on one of the opening plays, but he couldn't quite hold onto it. He also broke up another pass and later had a stop at the goal line. Meanwhile, Arvell Reese, his rookie counterpart, tracked down a pass and swiped it away on the sideline.

"I think we have a really good room," linebacker Micah McFadden said. "And our standard is going to be to be the best inside group in the league, and that's something we're looking forward to putting on tape."

On Edmunds, he added, "He is a natural leader. He's been doing it a long time, and he's still young, but he's year nine and been on three different teams, seen a lot of different locker rooms. He's had a lot of experience at the position and just in the league as well. He brings a lot to the table, and not just athletically, but off the field in that leadership quality as well. It's been good to see, and I think guys feed off of it."

Best of the rest

Dart showed good poise on a completion to Fields with safety Ar'Darius Washington barreling down on the quarterback.

Running back Cam Skattebo had a nice catch-and-run up the sideline during 11-on-11.

"I like our [running back] room," offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said yesterday. "I think we've got a good group of guys. Getting Skatt back and trying to get him healthy and getting him to the point he's at. He looks really good. I think he's slowly, every day improving, which is great."

Batted passes have been a major storyline this summer. Brian Burns and Khalid Kareem added to the defense's ledger with two more on Wednesday. Rookie linebacker Jack Kelly also tipped a pass.

Outside linebacker Abdul Carter had a tackle for loss in addition to a would-be sack. He also applied pressure on another play, which led to a sack by defensive lineman Darius Alexander.

Devin Singletary, the veteran in the running back room, also had a long catch-and run.

"I think some people are stepping up," Harbaugh said. "I really like, I mean, obviously Motor [Singletary] is a really good football player. He always has been. He's had a great camp. You know exactly what he's going to give you."

Rookie cornerback Colton Hood got his fingertips on a long pass breakup at the goal line. Art Green had an almost identical play a few reps later in the same vicinity.
