Practice Report (8/12): View from the sideline

ABDUL-CARTER-CITIZENS

The Giants were back in pads for their 13th training camp practice of the summer. Temperatures were in the upper 80s under sunny skies. The practice had a heavy focus on situational work.

* The final period of practice was set up as a fourth quarter simulation. Ten minutes were put on the clock in a tied game. The second team offense went three and out on their first possession, with a batted pass by Zacch Pickens ending the drive. After the punt, Jaxson Dart converted a first down on a quick pass to Isaiah Likely, but a dropped pass and a combined sack for Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux forced a punt.

The second team offense converted a pair of first downs on their next possession, but a Bobby Jamison-Travis run stop and a Khalid Kareem batted pass ended that drive. The first team offense went three and out after a holding penalty on a first down run, and a Darius Alexander sack off an Abdul Carter pressure on third and long ended the drive. A Jordan Stout punt pinned the second team offense deep in its own territory.

The second team offense converted a key third down when Jameis Winston connected with Dalen Cambre on a crossing route. On 4th and 3, Winston connected with Cambre again for a key conversion past midfield. After three straight incompletions, including a pass breakup by Art Green, Dominic Zvada came on and hit a game-winning 62-yard kick that had plenty of room to spare as time expired.

* Prior to the final period, Zvada made 6 of 6 attempts and Ben Sauls made 5 of 6.

* The situational period focused on different types of quarterback sneak scenarios on short down and distances.

* Instead of wide receiver-defensive back 1-on-1's during 9-on-7, they practiced two man route concepts near the line of scrimmage. The offense practiced some rub routes, while the defense had to navigate plays with intentional traffic created by the offense. Calvin Austin III caught a deep pass during the period, and Art Green had a pass breakup.

* The first team period focused on different third down situations. Tremaine Edmunds nearly came away with an interception and batted a pass at the line two plays later. Dart connected with Likely, Cam Skattebo and Theo Johnson for first downs, though the last one might not have counted since Brian Burns was in position for a potential sack. Khalid Kareeem also managed a sack. Jack Kelly and Tyler Nubin both got around the quarterback. Abdul Carter had a tackle for loss and Burns had a batted pass. Raheem Layne had a pass breakup.

* The next period featured third and fourth down plays of various distances. Dart connected with Darius Slayton, Isaiah Likely and Theo Johnson for first downs. Tyler Nubin came over to break up a pass to a running back near the line of scrimmage. Ar'Darius Washington had a pass breakup and Arvell Reese had one of his own, tracking all the way to the sideline to knock a pass away.

* The team then shifted to red zone work. Dart hit Patrick Ricard on a short pass near the line of scrimmage and he ran through the middle for a touchdown. Korie Black played good coverage to prevent a completion to Odell Beckham Jr. Marlon Davidson had a stop on an inside run. Dart finished his set of reps hitting Malachi Fields in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.

* Damon Bankston ran it in for a touchdown when the second group took the field. Abdul Carter and Elijah Campbell combined for a run stop. Dalen Cambre caught a touchdown pass from Winston to close his set of reps.

* In offensive line-defensive line 1-on-1's, Jermaine Eluemunor and Andrew Thomas continued to protect the edge well. Chauncey Golston won more than one rep, including one when they were working on two man pass-rush stunts and twists. Aaron Stinnie combined with Marcus Mbow and then JC Davis to handle two of those pass rush games. Jon Runyan also showed his physicality, shutting down two two-man games. Burns and Carter got wins for the defense in consecutive pass rush games.

* The offense ran 7-on7 pass skeleton at the same time. Brandon Allen hit Xavier Gipson on a deep post for a score down the middle of the field. Colton Hood and Art Green both had excellent pass breakups, getting their heads around on deep passes down the right sideline. Malachi Fields caught a deep pass from Jameis Winston down the sideline, leaping to make a contested catch over the cornerback. Devin Singletary caught a deep wheel route from Winston, who at one point during the period completed three straight passes on a short one to Fidone, a deep one to Austin and the aforementioned completion to Fields.
