22 Questions in 22 Days: Top comeback candidates

22-QUESTIONS-BLAKE-MARTINEZ

With the calendar flipped to July, Giants.com asks 22 important questions leading up to the start of the 2022 training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

For 22 days, a member of the Giants.com crew will answer one question about the roster, coaching staff, schedule, and much more.

No. 18: Who's your Comeback Player of the Year candidate?

Lance Medow: In order to classify as a comeback player of the year candidate, you had to have missed a bulk of the previous season. While many will make a case for Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley given they both dealt with injuries in 2021, I think Blake Martinez is even more appealing because he was limited to only three games last season due to a torn ACL he suffered in Week 3. On top of that, Martinez was such a valuable piece to the Giants' run defense that once he went down, that facet took a significant hit.

Although the team is now running a new scheme under Wink Martindale, the value of stopping the run never changes, and having Martinez back in the middle of the defense will be a huge boost in terms of communication and production. Since his second season in the league in 2017, Martinez has been one of the NFL's top tacklers, and he showcased that in his first year with New York when he piled up 140 tackles. Unfortunately, his encore performance was cut short, but with him fully healthy this season, Martinez will have a great opportunity to regain his form and put his stamp back on the Giants' defense.

Once again, the New York Giants are bringing back their classic blue uniforms from the '80s and '90s this Sunday as part of two Legacy Games presented by Quest.
