The Giants.com crew members discuss the biggest takeaways from the victory over the Bills in the preseason opener.
John Schmeelk: My first takeaway is always going to be the same one coming out of a preseason game: There were no serious injuries. This is a huge deal whenever it happens in a preseason game. But I'm sure you're looking for more than that right?
I'm going to keep it simple. The Giants scored 34 points. Even in preseason games, the Giants haven't scored that many points since 2017. Does this remotely mean that the Giants are all of a sudden going to start putting up 30 points per game this season? No, of course not. It's important to take preseason games for what they are and not infer much future performance from them. With that said, the aggregate performance of the offense has to be encouraging.
The Giants did not fumble the football or throw an interception. Three of the four Giants quarterbacks had quarterback ratings over 100. The Giants had three plays of 20+ yards and eight of 15+ yards. They scored 16 first-half points, something they did only twice last season. The Giants did not allow a sack and PFF's tracking only had them allowing nine pressures on 57 drop-backs.
While all those team aspects of the performance are important, individual performances from young players are always the most important thing to take out of preseason games. And you can't bury the lede of Jaxson Dart's performance. It's important not to take too much out of a quarterback's performance in his first preseason game, but you would rather have the player perform well than poorly.
The numbers (12-for-19, 154 yards, one touchdown, 106 passer rating, three rushes for 24 yards) were impressive but his overall demeanor was more striking to me. What we saw on his college tape carried over to his NFL performance very quickly. He showed good pocket presence. He threw a nice go-ball and displayed nice touch on different passes. He showed his ability to run and escape the pocket. He also handled the NFL operation well, which was very important to Brian Daboll heading into the game. He did not look like a fish out of water. It was a good start for Jaxson Dart, and now he will have a chance to build on it against the Jets next week.

Dan Salomone: "We've got to be ready to play when September comes." That line from Joe Schoen stuck out during the general manager's appearance in the broadcast booth with Bob Papa and Carl Banks. On the heels of a key offseason, which emphasized acquiring physical and mental toughness on the roster, the Giants played all healthy starters in the preseason opener.
"There's no substitute for playing the game," Daboll said last week, his only hint of what was to come. "You have to tackle. You don't do a whole lot [in practice]. Some people do some live tackling, but it's not much. There's no substitute for a quarterback when he knows he can get hit. There's no substitute for an offensive guard cleaning the pocket or being very physical in the run game in gang tackling. That's the game of football."
It doesn't sound like they will change their tune for the preseason slate and two joint practices with the Jets.
"I thought we needed that," Daboll said in his postgame press conference in Buffalo. "We'll do it again. We're going to play in the preseason. People that are able to play are going to play, and if they're not able to play or a doctor or a trainer says it would be smart to hold him out, we'll hold him out. But other than that, we're going to play."
There are just 28 days until the Giants open the regular season at Washington, their first of back-to-back road games in the NFC East to start the 2025 campaign. Since their 2-0 start in 2022, the first season under Schoen and Daboll, the Giants are just 2-6 in the month of September.
Matt Citak: It was an encouraging start to the season for the Giants. Numerous of the team's offseason acquisitions played well, but more importantly, the offense as a unit put together a strong performance. It didn't matter which quarterback was under center, as all four signal-callers led the offense on scoring drives. The Giants topped the 30-point mark, something that has not been too frequent of an occurrence over the last few years. A major reason for the offense's success in the preseason opener was the production of the big guys up front.
While many pundits circled the offensive line as the team's biggest question mark heading into the season, the unit got the 2025 campaign off to a strong start. Between Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito, Giants quarterbacks attempted 51 passes against the Bills. The group completed 35 of those attempts, good for a 68.6 completion percentage, for 317 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions, which earned the group an overall passer rating of 104.8. But you can't talk about the quarterbacks' success without mentioning the fact that despite dropping back 51 times, the quarterbacks did not get sacked a single time on Saturday. You heard that right – not a single sack. It wasn't like the Bills weren't playing their starters, either. The O-line held up against Buffalo's starters in the first quarter, and continued that success throughout the game as the second and third team defenses came onto the field. After the game, the Giants quarterbacks made sure to heap some praise to the guys protecting them.
"I thought the O-line did a great job," Wilson said. "The ones kept space, some really good players on the defensive line for them. They did a good job keeping space for me. Receivers got open quickly in an on-time manner. That's all part of it as well. They have great confidence in our offensive line. They go against the best guys in the world every day, and that makes us better too… We got guys with depth coming off the bench too that have great experience and great talent. I think we just got a lot of great confidence. I think Carm's (Bricillo) a great teacher in the game. They create that space for us, allows us to make a lot of throws."
"I was really happy with how our O-line played," Dart added. "I don't think that we had a sack all game, if I'm right. They played amazing and I was really happy with the operation."
Since a big theme of the day was the performance of the rookies, let's touch on fifth-round pick Marcus Mbow, who was a factor in the line's success against the Bills. The 22-year-old, whose versatility was part of the reason why the Giants drafted him, spent time at both tackle positions on Saturday and looked good on both sides.
"We were talking at halftime like it's been kind of quiet over there on the right side. It seems like Mbow is doing a good job," general manager Joe Schoen said on the broadcast. "We'll have to watch the film, but he's done a good job thus far. When we don't recognize them, you don't hear their name, that's typically a good thing at the tackle position."
