Carl Banks, Charlie Conerly among 34 Senior players to advance in Pro Football Hall of Fame vote

CARL-BANKS

It has been a busy week for the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committees as the Class of 2026 starts to take shape.

The reduction process continued Thursday with the announcement of 34 players who moved one step closer to Canton in the Seniors category.

Quarterback Charlie Conerly and linebacker Carl Banks made the next round from an original pool of 162 nominees.

Conerly (No. 13) and Banks (No. 17) were both ranked in the Giants’ Top 100 Players last year to celebrate the 100th season.

Defensive back Everson Walls, who is known for his days in Dallas but won his only Super Bowl with the Giants in 1990, also made the list of 34 Seniors to be considered for the Class of 2026.

To be considered for the "Seniors" category, players must have last played at least 25 full seasons ago (no more recently than the 2000 season). Qualifications also include five years of service and at least one recognized postseason honor.

The next step will be a cutdown vote to nine Semifinalists. Those ballots will be cast and results announced in about four weeks, according to the Hall of Fame.

Reduction voting in three other categories for the Hall of Fame (Modern-Era Players, Coach and Contributor) also is being conducted this month.

The Coach category has been cut down to 12, a list that includes two-time Super Bowl champion head coach Tom Coughlin. Meanwhile, the Modern-Era Player category has been reduced to 52, including two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning.

Eventually, 20 Finalists will be presented at the Selection Committee's annual meeting next year in advance of Super Bowl LX: 15 Modern-Era Players, three Seniors, one Coach and one Contributor. While there is no set number of enshrinees for any class, the Hall of Fame's selection process bylaws stipulate that between four and eight new members will be selected.

The Class of 2026 will be enshrined next August in Canton.
