Top draft pick Deonte Banks signs rookie contract

DEONTE-BANKS-FLOOR-DECOR

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Number one is signed, and one remains.

The Giants announced they have signed cornerback Deonte Banks, their first-round choice in last month's NFL Draft. General manager Joe Schoen traded up one spot in the first round to take Banks 24th overall.

Banks is the sixth of the Giants' seven draft choices to sign a contract, leaving center John Michael Schmitz, the second-round selection from Minnesota, as the lone unsigned pick.

"Tae" Banks played in 30 games with 21 starts in four seasons at Maryland. His career totals included 83 tackles (61 solo), two interceptions, 13 passes defensed and one blocked kick.

As a senior in 2022, he played in a career-high 12 games with eight starts. He was selected honorable mention All-Big Ten after compiling a career-best 38 tackles (25 solo) and nine passes defensed, plus one interception and a half-sack.

Banks recorded first interception since 2019 when he picked ff Connor Bazelak on the first Hoosiers play of the second half and added four tackles at Indiana. He matched his career high with six tackles (three solo) vs. Purdue.

Banks is a Baltimore native who closely followed the Ravens when Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale held the same position with that franchise. Martindale's defense frequently challenges opposing wide receivers with aggressive press man coverage

"I actually watched it a lot," Banks said. "They send a lot of pressure and put man behind it. I like that."

And the Giants are thrilled with the opportunity to deploy Banks in that scheme.
