The Hynoceros has been taken off the endangered species list.
A true fullback will once again roam freely for the New York Giants, and Henry Hynoski sees it as a way for the franchise to get truly and fully back to where it belongs.
When news broke that the team signed Patrick Ricard, a six-time Pro Bowl selection in John Harbaugh's backfield in Baltimore, Hynoski's phone started to light up just like his face did.
The Super Bowl XLVI champion, now the principal at his alma mater Southern Columbia Area (Pa.) High School, is part of a newly-formed text chain with current and former fullbacks. The group includes legends like Mike Alstott, Lorenzo Neal, Sam Gash – and Ricard himself.
"The news broke in our text group before I guess it even really hit the internet," Hynoski told Giants.com. "Everybody was responding and congratulating him, and I said, 'Congratulations, Patrick. Welcome to New York. You're going to absolutely love it here.'"
As an undrafted rookie in 2011, Hynoski helped pave the way for the Giants' most recent Super Bowl run. Four years earlier, Madison Hedgecock did the same.
"I'm just super pumped from a football perspective," Hynoski said. "We kind of got away from what our identity was as New York Giants football. If you look at the success that we've had, long-term team success, there was a fullback on the field on the teams that had success and which ultimately won Super Bowl victories. It's good to see that we're getting back to what our brand of football is, and I know this kid here is an absolute hammer and he's going to be paving the way."
There was no question in Hynoski's mind when the Giants hired John Harbaugh, the longtime Ravens head coach would bring along Pancake Pat.
"It's going to be fun to watch, and the future of this team is bright," Hynoski said. "If there's anybody who's going to get it done and that knows how to do it with a fullback, it's John Harbaugh."

Another is Tom Coughlin, Hynoski's one and only coach in the NFL.
"They're cut from the same cloth, the same mold," Hynoski said. "His teams fit right along the lines of our teams of old. The success that they had, the consistency, you can't do that without being a disciplined team. I was super pumped. I've always remained hopeful for years in the past, but everything about all this just feels different. It really does. There's a different feeling this year, and I'm super excited."
Coughlin had simple instructions for his fullbacks in those days: "He'd say the purpose of the exercise is to move the guy that you're blocking out of the hole. If there's two people in the hole, take two out."
Then defenses would have to deal with the likes of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, which no one wanted to do willingly.
The latter has drawn comparisons to current Giants running back Cam Skattebo by people around the league, and Hynoski is one of them. It's not just because Skattebo wears No. 44, like Bradshaw.
"I thought I was watching Bradshaw all over again," Hynoski said of Skattebo's rookie campaign, which was cut short by injury after he scored seven touchdowns in his first eight games. "Those guys make the ground hurt when they run. It's going to be fun to watch. Skattebo behind Ricard, that's prime football entertainment. I'll be tuning in."
Hynoski added: "Skattebo reminds me of Bradshaw, and I was kind of in the same mold of Ricard in a sense, so I feel like this is Hynoski-Bradshaw 2.0 coming back."

Playing football isn't for everyone. Playing fullback is for almost no one.
"Mentality-wise, you've got to be one of the most hardnosed, toughest dudes on the planet," Hynoski said. "There's just no way around it. It's along the lines of being an accomplished UFC fighter as far as the toll it takes on your body and the impact and hits that you take and what you have to expect to take to the table each and every time. It all starts mentally. Obviously, you've got to have the frame and the physique to go along with it, but you've got to be ready. I told my wife it's like going into battle every single game. You've got to get yourself just prepared because you know you're not going to come out of that game the way you came in."
The 2011 NFC Championship Game is still a vivid reminder of that. Hynoski and the Giants marched into San Francisco to take on another Harbaugh team – Jim's 49ers, which was "another team that used a fullback and went after you" – in a high-stakes struggle.
"That was the most hardnosed, legendary, grind-it-out football game I was ever part of," Hynoski said. "It was the most physical game. That game right there was a true test of will and just fortitude. That's the game that always stands out. I never felt like I did after any other football game in my entire career as I did after that NFC Championship Game. Then the Super Bowl was right along those lines, not that it was more physical, just that the intensity level is just so high."
The Giants nearly played John Harbaugh's Ravens in that Super Bowl. Earlier on that Conference Championship Sunday, Baltimore's Billy Cundiff missed a 32-yard field goal that would have tied the game with 11 seconds left. Instead, the Patriots advanced to set up the Super Bowl rematch.
Heartbreaking, yes, but Harbaugh and company won it all a year later.
Those teams knew what it ultimately took to hoist the Lombardi trophy, and it required a fullback. At least, that's what they tell themselves in the group chat.
"You've got some old retired guys there and some new blood, and it's all about the appreciation for the fullback position and maintaining that status in the NFL and being the hammers that we're meant to be," Hynoski said. "It's a brotherhood bond because unless you've played the position, you don't really know exactly what it entails and what we have to go through and what we have to endure, the ups and downs of it. It's just something that's pretty cool to have that experience with these guys and to share our stories and our circumstances."

While it may not be reflected in their game checks relative to quarterbacks and other high-profile positions, fullbacks will always carry currency with fans.
Why is that?
"Because fans represent the blue-collar, working-class people that fullbacks represent as well," Hynoski said. "We're not the ones that are getting noticed or the recognition or the notoriety involved with it, and quite honestly, we don't care about that. I think that's what the fans appreciate most about it, and there's not a fanbase that appreciates a fullback more than New York. I think they've been calling for a true fullback. If you think about it, it's been over a decade since [there has been] a true fullback that you can just line up and grind out games with. And [Ricard] is the guy to do it – absolutely, 100 percent. And he can catch the ball, too. He's athletic for his size. He really is. He's athletic for his size, but he's a force. He's a hammer."
Hynoski wasn't always behind the scenes. In high school, he was the scene.
Hynoski finished sixth in Pennsylvania history with 7,165 career rushing yards and scored 113 touchdowns at perennial power Southern Columbia Area, which he led to a 58-3 mark in four years as a starter.
He was named The Associated Press Pennsylvania Class A Player of the Year as a senior after rushing for 2,407 yards and 42 touchdowns on 206 carries, an average of 11.7 yards per attempt, and led Southern Columbia to a 16-0 mark with an average victory margin of 39 points per contest. Southern Columbia won the PIAA Class A championship for a state-record fifth consecutive year.
In 20 career playoff games (all victories), Hynoski rushed for 3,234 yards and 41 touchdowns on 320 attempts (10.1 avg.). He set a PIAA state playoff record with 409 yards rushing and six touchdowns vs. Pius X in a state quarterfinal game his sophomore season.
In the NFL, Hynoski had 12 rushing attempts for 33 yards.
"I'll be honest with you, I never really cared about stats or breaking records," Hynoski said. "I just wanted to win, and that was my role at the time. I loved that it was on my shoulders, but it was just a different approach and a shift in mentality. I just love the game. That was what my role called for me at the time. College was a little bit of a different role [at Pitt]. I was more of a H-back than a true fullback in college. It's just adapting. If you love football, you adapt. I would have played linebacker if they told me. It's just the mentality, and it goes back to having that mentality as a fullback. You really have to love football to be a fullback, especially a true pro-style fullback, three-point stance, hand in the dirt, running power, running lead, running iso. You've got to love football to be able to do that."
Now he loves paving the way for high school students as their principal and raising two children – Hudson, 8, and Paulina, who was just registered for kindergarten – with his wife Laura.
"We're just enjoying our time with our family and continuing to enjoy watching them grow," Hynoski said. "And they're in my school district, too. So, I'll be their principal eventually."
A piece of advice to the students of Southern Columbia: stay in line.
