Instant Analysis: Giants defeat Eagles, 19-11, in Philadelphia

GIANTS-WIN-EAGLES

AT A GLANCE

The Giants entered the bye week knowing they would have a chance to extend their lead in the NFC East when they came out of it. They did just that on Sunday with a 19-11 victory over the Eagles in Philadelphia, a place they had not won since 2013.

With the win, the Giants improved to 5-2-1 in John Harbaugh's first season as their head coach. The Eagles dropped to 2-7 with a seventh consecutive loss.

UP NEXT

The Giants will play their second divisional game in a five-day span when they host the Commanders on Thursday night. The first leg of the season series ended in a 27-27 tie in Week 5 at Washington. The Commanders fell to 2-5-1 with a 20-13 loss to the Rams on Sunday.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy suffered a hip injury in the second half. He was initially listed as questionable to return but returned to the game. McCarthy took a big hit from Eagles linebacker Zack Baun with 12:02 left in the third quarter after running for three yards. Baun also injured his back on the play.

McCarthy was replaced by Jameis Winston, who has already started four games this season in place of the injured Jaxson Dart. Before the injury, McCarthy had completed nine of 13 passes for 101 yards against the Eagles. He was sacked five times while making his second consecutive start with the Giants.

Called into action in the middle of a game again, Winston completed six of eight passes for 71 yards – in addition to two rushes for 11 yards – and the Giants' only touchdown of the afternoon to tight end Isaiah Likely. It put the Giants ahead 13-8 with 2:25 remaining in the third quarter.

McCarthy returned on the team's next possession and finished 12 of 19 passing for 127 yards. He also had four runs for 22 yards.

With Cam Skattebo out with a hamstring injury, Devin Singletary started for the first time since Week 2 of last season and rushed 21 times for 31 yards. He had 18 carries total this season entering today.

Overall, the Giants had just 16 yards on 10 carries in the first half, and ended with 80 yards on 31 attempts (2.6 yards per carry).

The running back room had another shakeup when Tyrone Tracy Jr. was placed on injured reserve before the bye week. To bolster the group, the Giants signed Gregory Desrosiers off the Chargers' practice squad and elevated Phil Mafah. In his NFL debut, Desrosiers had three carries for 20 yards.

Malik Nabers, who became the first Giants wide receiver to be named NFC Offensive Player of the Month, kicked off November with five catches for 43 yards.

Likely caught five passes for 53 yards and a score. In the process, he broke his personal record for most catches in a season, and there are still nine games to play. His previous career-high was 42 receptions in 2024 with the Ravens.

Darnell Mooney led the team with 54 receiving yards on three catches. Rookie Malachi Fields added three catches for 40 yards.

The Giants signed wide receiver Jalin Hyatt to the active roster from the practice squad. He was targeted once on a deep pass attempt early in the game.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE

Like the Giants, the Eagles have now started three different quarterbacks this season. Joe Milton III made his first career start three weeks after signing with the Eagles' practice squad. He replaced Tanner McKee, who took over for Jalen Hurts. Milton's last appearance was against the Giants in the 2025 season finale as a member of the Cowboys. Milton was held to 169 yards on 18 of 34 passing. He did lead the team with 64 rushing yards on nine attempts.

Arvell Reese delivered one of the biggest hits in the NFL this season when he came off the edge untouched and sacked Milton, forcing the quarterback to lose the ball early in the second quarter. Micah McFadden, his partner at inside linebacker since Tremaine Edmunds was placed on injured reserve, recovered the fumble.

Reese was just getting started. The rookie fifth overall pick finished with 12 tackles (10 solo), three sacks and a forced fumble. Reese's nine total tackles in the first half are the most by a Giants rookie in a single half since at least 1994, when the stat was first officially tracked. Reese is only the second rookie in franchise history with at least three sacks in a game (B.J. Hill did it on Dec. 2, 2018 against the Bears).

The Giants forced five three-and-outs on Sunday. They entered the game leading the NFL in that category (32.9 percent of opponents' drives).

The Eagles converted just five third downs on 18 tries while the Giants recorded a season-high seven sacks, including one from Darius Alexander to seal the game on the final play.

Saquon Barkley scored the only touchdown on a three-yard run with 2:09 left in the first quarter. On the ensuing extra point, the Giants were penalized for too many men on the field. It allowed Philadelphia to have the ball spotted at the one-yard line and Milton rushed in for a successful two-point conversion and an 8-6 lead.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS

Jordan Stout entered the game averaging a league-best 51.6 yards per punt this season, which would be the fourth-highest average in NFL history (min. 25 punts). On Sunday, he averaged 52.3 yards on six punts, five of which were downed inside the 20.

Punting was the game within a game. Philadelphia's Braden Mann booted an 86-yarder to end the first half. It was the longest punt by any NFL player since the Giants' Rodney Williams had a 90-yarder in Denver in Week 1 of the 2001 season.

After a perfect first four weeks, Giants kicker Dominic Zvada missed five of his next nine field goal attempts in three games before the bye week. The rookie bounced back on Sunday by hitting all four from 53, 46, 38 and 49 yards. He has now made six field goals of at least 50 yards this season. All other rookies in Giants history combined have made five.

Charlie Jones, who was limited all week with a hand injury, muffed a punt in the second quarter. The Eagles recovered the ball, but the turnover was offset by Reese's hit and McFadden's fumble recovery on the ensuing drive.
