Instant Analysis: Giants fall to Eagles, 38-20

FINAL-SCORE-EAGLES

AT A GLANCE

The Giants were unable to complete the season sweep of the Eagles, falling to the divisional rivals 38-20 at Lincoln Financial Field. The game was marred when they lost running back Cam Skattebo in the first half due to a dislocated ankle. The rookie left in the second quarter and was taken to a local hospital for furth evaluation.

UP NEXT

The Giants (2-6) return home from two consecutive road games to host the 49ers, who fell to 5-3 with a 26-15 loss at Houston.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

Skattebo, who entered Week 7 leading all NFL rookies in scrimmage yards and touchdowns, scored through the air for the second consecutive week on an 18-yard catch-and-run. The touchdown came after a missed 58-yard field goal attempt that would have given the Eagles an early 10-0. Instead, Skattebo's touchdown tied the game at 7-7 with 2:56 left in the first quarter.

A tough scene unfolded later in the second quarter, when Skattebo suffered a dislocated ankle that visibly affected teammates on the field. The fourth-round pick from Arizona State was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Jaxson Dart checked off another first in his young NFL career – make a divisional road start. The rookie quarterback completed his first five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown, until the attempt to Skattebo when he got hurt.

Dart completed 14 of 24 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for his fourth touchdown of the year.

Dart was sacked five times. One came one from defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who missed the first meeting with the Giants due to a heel injury.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. stepped in for Skattebo and had a team-high 10 carries for 39 yards.

Wide receiver Darius Slayton returned to the field after missing two games with a hamstring injury. He had a 68-yard touchdown catch nullified by an offensive pass interference penalty on himself on a fourth-and-11 play midway through the fourth quarter. The Giants were forced to punt back to the Eagles, who were leading 31-13.

The Giants also got back center John Michael Schmitz, who cleared concussion protocol. He last played in the Giants' Week 6 victory over the Eagles.

Wide receiver Lil'Jordan Humphrey was elevated from the practice squad for the third consecutive week.

Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, who had his only three catches of the season in the first game against Philadelphia, was inactive.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE

The Giants started the game without half of their secondary. They had originally ruled out cornerback Paulson Adebo (knee) and defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (neck) on the final injury report of the week. Safety Jevón Holland was listed as doubtful with a knee injury but then downgraded to out. All three players did not travel with the team to Philadelphia.

Cornerback Deonte Banks and safety Dane Belton made their first starts of the season.

The secondary lost another player when starting cornerback Cor'Dale Flott took an inadvertent hit from his teammate, inside linebacker Bobby Okereke, late in the first half. He was ruled out with a concussion.

That forced Korie Black, a seventh-round draft pick who returned to the team this week, to play the first defensive snaps of his career. The Giants had waived Black on Aug. 27. The Jets signed him to their practice squad two days later and elevated him to their gameday roster for Weeks 2 and 7. He had played 15 snaps total, all on special teams.

On the second play from scrimmage, running back Saquon Barkley broke a 65-yard touchdown run. The former Giant had just 58 yards on 12 carries in their first matchup of the season. His previous season-long run this year was 18 yards. Barkley also caught a touchdown as he ran for 150 yards and recorded 24 more through the air.

Tank Bigsby added 104 rushing yards as the Giants allowed 277 yards on 30 carries (9.3 yards per attempt), not including kneel-downs.

Outside linebacker Brian Burns entered Week 7 tied with the Rams' Byron Young for the league lead in sacks. Burns added his 10th of the season on Sunday as the Giants sacked Jalen Hurts four times total.

Hurts broke the game open with a 17-yard touchdown to Dallas Goedert, the tight end's second of the day, giving the Eagles a 31-13 lead with 11:17 left in the fourth quarter. Hurts, who had a perfect 158.3 passer rating last week at Minnesota, posted a 141.5 rating on Sunday with four touchdowns.

The Eagles racked up 23 first downs to the Giants' 13.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS

Kicker Graham Gano returned to practice this week and was activated off injured reserve. Gano suffered a groin injury in final warmups leading up to Sunday Night Football against the Chiefs in Week 3. Jude McAtamney, who kicked for Gano the past four weeks, was waived on Tuesday among a series of roster moves. The Giants also have veteran kicker Younghoe Koo on the practice squad.

On Sunday, Gano made both of field goal attempts from 47 and 34 yards, in addition to two extra points.

Punter Jamie Gillan once again handled kickoffs. The Giants entered Sunday with the No. 3 kickoff coverage team (21.3 yards per return) but allowed a 41-yard return by Will Shipley following Skattebo's touchdown. Barkley scored his second touchdown on the ensuing drive for the Eagles.
