Giants sign veteran kicker Younghoe Koo to practice squad

YOUNGHOE-KOO-PRIMEPOINT

The New York Giants today signed veteran kicker Younghoe Koo to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, they released linebacker Curtis Jacobs from the practice squad.

The addition comes after kicker Graham Gano injured his groin in final warmups leading up to Sunday Night Football against the Chiefs. The veteran was unable to kick in the first half and was limited to a certain distance in the second half.

Following Cam Skattebo's touchdown in the second quarter, left-footed punter Jamie Gillan attempted the Giants' first extra point attempt of the game, but it was blocked by defensive end Ashton Gillotte. Special teams ace Gunner Olszewski had assumed holding duties for Gillan, the usual holder for Gano. The Giants did not attempt another field goal or PAT until 10:12 left in the fourth quarter, when Gano made his first appearance of the game and made a 25-yard field goal.

Koo, who was released by the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, made a Pro Bowl in 2020. He has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week four times and NFC Special Teams Player of the Month twice.

Koo, 5-10 and 195 pounds, had been with Atlanta since 2019 after starting his career in 2017 with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Giants' Week 4 opponent. He also had a brief stint on New England Patriots' practice squad in 2019.

Koo has made 181 of 211 field goal attempts (85.8 percent) in 93 career games. His longest is 58 yards, which he kicked with two seconds remaining in a 26-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 4 of the 2024 season.

Koo has been successful on all 52 of his field goal attempts inside of 30 yards; 52 of 56 (92.9 percent) from 30-39 yards; 48 of 63 (76.2 percent) from 40-49 yards; and 29 of 40 (72.5 percent) from 50+ yards. He has also made 175 of 182 extra point attempts (96.2) to give him a scoring total of 718 points. His 700 kicking points with the Falcons are third-most in the history of the franchise. Koo has also handled 200 kickoffs with 98 touchbacks (49.0 percent).

Koo made 27 consecutive field goals in 2020, the longest streak in a single season in Falcons history and the second-longest streak in franchise history overall.

Koo was originally signed by the Chargers as a free agent following the 2017 NFL Draft.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Koo played at Ridgewood High School in New Jersey. He then became the first kicker in Georgia Southern history to be named a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate placekicker.

Koo will join fellow kicker Jude McAtamney, who has an international exemption, on the Giants' practice squad. McAtamney made his NFL debut for the Giants last season and became the first Irish-born player to score in a game since 1985.

Teams are allowed to have a practice squad of 17 players, as long as one player qualifies and is designated as an international player.
