Jameis Winston and Jon Runyan Jr. are here to stay.
The New York Giants signed the veteran quarterback and left guard to two-year extensions, keeping them under contract through 2028.
The Giants open the 2026 season on Sunday night against the Cowboys. It will be Winston's second year as a Giant and the 12th in the NFL for the former No. 1 overall draft choice. Runyan, meanwhile, has started 29 games at left guard for the Giants over the last two seasons after beginning his career with the Packers.
Winston has played in 108 regular-season games (89 starts) for the Buccaneers (2015-19), Saints (2020-23), Browns (2024) and Giants (2025). He has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 24,792 yards, 156 touchdowns and 113 interceptions. On the ground, Winston has 1,320 yards and 13 touchdowns on 330 carries. Through the air, he has one reception for 33 yards and a touchdown on a memorable trick play last season in Detroit.
Winston saw action in three games (two starts) for the Giants in 2025 while serving as a backup to Russell Wilson and then-rookie Jaxson Dart. Winston will once again serve as the No. 2 behind Dart in the two-quarterback room, giving the Giants one of the most accomplished backups in the league.
Winston is still the Buccaneers' all-time leader in passing yards (19,737), passing touchdowns (121), pass attempts (2,548), completions (1,563) and yards per attempt (7.75 – minimum 1,500 attempts).
Winston is one of nine players in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season. He did so in 2019, when he became the first player in NFL history to pass for at least 450 yards in consecutive contests.
After Tampa Bay, Winston started 10 games over the next four seasons with New Orleans. In his lone postseason appearance with them in 2020, Winston completed his only passing attempt for a 56-yard touchdown against Tampa Bay.
Winston signed with the Browns in 2024 and started seven games. On Dec. 2, 2024, Winston set Cleveland's single-game franchise record with 497 passing yards on the road in Denver.
Winston earned his lone Pro Bowl nod as a rookie in 2015 after an illustrious career at Florida State. He posted a 27-1 record as a starter and became the second freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. Winston led the Seminoles to back-to-back 13-0 regular seasons, winning the 2014 BCS National Championship.
Off the field, Winston founded the Dream Forever Foundation to impact the lives of financially disadvantaged children and youth through encouragement, opportunities and resources.
Runyan helped pave the way for a 2025 Giants rushing attack that ranked among the top five in the NFL in first downs (141, fourth), rushing touchdowns (22, tied for fourth), rushing yards (2,195, fifth) and runs of 10 yards or more (59, fifth). The Giants' 22 rushing scores were the third-most in franchise history.
Overall, Runyan has played in 96 regular-season games with 79 starts (51 at left guard, 28 right guard) and in five postseason games with three starts (two at right guard, one at left guard).
He never missed a game in his four seasons with the Packers, who drafted him in 2020. He became the first Green Bay offensive lineman selected in the sixth round or later to play in every game as a rookie since 2000.
Prior to the NFL, Runyan played in 34 games with 26 career starts (25 at left tackle, one at right tackle) at Michigan under John Harbaugh's brother, Jim Harbaugh.
Runyan earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from the conference's coaches as both a junior and senior. He was a two-time recipient of the Hugh H. Rader Memorial Award, given to the team's top offensive lineman. He joined his father, Jon Runyan (1994), to become the first father-son duo to win the award.
Jon Sr. played 14 seasons in the NFL as an offensive tackle with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans (1996-99), Philadelphia Eagles (2000-08) and San Diego Chargers (2009). Jon Sr. also served as the U.S. Representative for New Jersey's third congressional district from 2011 to 2015 and currently works for the NFL as the vice president of policy and rules administration. He became a foe-turned-friend of Michael Strahan, who didn't just invite the elder Runyan to his Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony but movingly spoke of him in the speech.
