Greg Newsome II had a lot of battles against John Harbaugh in their AFC days.
Now they are battling alongside each other – and will continue to do so.
Newsome, an established cornerback in the middle of his first season with the Giants and sixth overall in the NFL, signed a three-year contract extension today at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. It will keep him with the Giants through the 2029 season.
The extension is a full-circle moment for Newsome, who bet on himself in free agency with the hopes of finding a permanent home.
"I feel like this is an opportunity for me to be here long-term," Newsome said in March. "There were other places that could have had a little bit of a longer-term deal, but I wanted to be here and I wanted to showcase myself in front of the New York fan base and my coaches and players. I'm excited to start fresh here now and hopefully we get something done where I can retire a Giant, because that's what I want to do."
The 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Newsome has played in 77 regular-season games (64 starts) for the Cleveland Browns (2021-25), Jacksonville Jaguars (2025) and Giants (2026).
His career totals include 232 tackles (six for losses), 49 passes defensed and five interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Newsome has appeared in two postseason games and made one start.
This season, Newsome has started all six games in which he played and recorded 25 tackles, six passes defensed and an interception in a Week 4 victory over Arizona. That game was ultimately decided by a 98-yard pick-six by fellow starting cornerback Deonte Banks as time expired. It came a week after safety Jevón Holland snatched a game-winning interception.
Newsome missed the most recent game in Houston with a concussion, but he has been integral to a resurgent secondary. The Giants, who lead the NFC East at the bye week and have a chance to extend it with back-to-back divisional games coming up, have allowed the second-fewest yards per pass attempt (6.14) in the NFL through eight weeks.
Overall, the defense ranks first in opponent three-and-out percentage (32.9), third against the pass (184.9 yards allowed per game), ninth in total yards (313.0) and 15th in scoring (23.0).
"He's been a great impact," defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson said last month. "I love him. Man, I believe so wholeheartedly in him and his ability. He has cultivated the room with his energy, with his effort, his attention to detail, his willingness to learn, his willingness to go the extra mile to bring guys in with – him and Jevón bring the DBs in the group, watch extra film together. They spend a lot of time together. If you see them, like I say, their energy is infectious. … We're happy to have him. He's been an outstanding addition to this defense and to this organization."
