Practice Report (6/2): Eye on the rookies

ARVELL-REESE-BOBS

The Giants held their 8th OTA on Tuesday at the Quest Diagnostics Center. Temperatures were in the seventies with a steady breeze and occasional gusts under mostly sunny skies.

* I made a point to keep an eye on the rookies during the individual part of practice and through some of the team drills. The offensive line was working on gap scheme drills, pulling a guard around to lead the way through the hole. Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa showed his athleticism as a puller, which is something he did not do much as a tackle at Miami. Between reps he was trying to fine-tune his technique and get-off until he waited for his turn to come around again.

* J.C. Davis got a lot of work at offensive tackle today. He had the chance to get reps against some of the Giants' top pass rushers and held his own.

* Malachi Fields is the tallest and second heaviest (Ryan Miler – one pound heavier) wide receiver in the room, and it is easy to see. Despite his size, as the Giants scouts and front office talked about when they drafted him, he is able to drop his weight and change direction well to flatten out on out and crossing routes, which gives the quarterback space to get the ball to him. Dart showed his trust in Fields later in practice when he put the ball high in the air for a jumping catch, even though there was not much room to fit the ball in.

* Colton Hood was working with the cornerbacks to pass off pre-snap motion with another defensive back. Communication, anticipation and technique is key to make sure everyone is accounted for, and there didn't seem to be any issues during the individual part of practice.

* Arvell Reese was lining up everywhere in the individual portion of drills. During team drills, he made a great play closing on a swing pass to Devin Singletary before he could get to the goal line during red zone drills.

* Bobby Jamison-Travis had an excellent run stop during team drills from his defensive tackle position.

* Rookie undrafted running back Damon Bankston showed his speed on a sweep to the left as he burst to the outside and around the defense for a big gain.

* Situational work on Tuesday focused on 4th and short plays and featured a variety of different run and pass plays. It was not completely full speed, but on one play Elijah Campbell did intercept a short pass and returned it for a touchdown. He would have had another quick stop on a checkdown to Eric Gray later in practice.

* Abdul Carter sped around the edge and into the backfield for a potential sack on the third play of the first team period. His ability to burst and bend is unrivaled.

* A day after Jason Sanders was released, Dominic Zvada attempted 13 kicks during practice, none longer than 47 yards, and made them all. It was his most consistent day kicking in the spring,

* Darnell Mooney caught a deep post from Dart in the second team period. Patrick Ricard caught a pass as he plucked it out of the air with one hand.

* The Giants' three new wide receivers also got involved. Braxton Berrios caught more than one pass over the middle, including a tough grab he was able to secure on a pass thrown slightly behind him. JuJu Smith-Schuster showed his comfort in Matt Nagy's offense, as he made a big play on a seam route over middle. Odell Beckham Jr. was on the field as well running routes and going through all the action during team drills.

* Chauncey Golston had a pair of pressures. Beau Brade forced an incompletion on a deep pass down the middle of the field. Brian Burns, Leki Fotu, Caleb Murphy and Trace Ford were in the backfield on different plays for potential sacks.

* Practice ended with three red zone periods with the offense trying to punch it in. The offense scored on a tough throw from Dart rolling to his left, squeezing it into Malachi Fields in the back corner of the end zone for a touchdown.
