The Giants.com crew members share their final thoughts and takeaways from Saturday's preseason victory over the Jets.
John Schmeelk: As I re-watched the Giants' offense on the All-22 this morning, a couple of things jumped out to me. The offensive line once again played a strong game. Giants quarterbacks, for the most part, had time to do what they needed to do in the pocket to execute the offense. The Jets had two sacks, but one came on a scramble where Jaxson Dart nearly escaped, and the other came on a play-action where Jameis Winston rolled out. According to Pro Football Focus, the Giants allowed only 10 pressures in the game for an impressive 23.3 percent pressure rate.
The other thing that jumped out to me was what a good job the offensive staff did setting up Dart for success when he was in the game. They designed plays for him to get the ball out of his hands quickly, had some designer stuff to allow him to get the ball to his first option, and set up some well-designed screens.
About 80 percent of Dart's passing yards came on receivers running after the catch and his average depth of target was just four yards. According to PFF, only four of Dart's passes traveled more than five yards in the air. He completed two of those, including the touchdown to tight end Greg Dulcich. But his most impressive throw, in my opinion, was his 19-yard completion to wide receiver Montrell Washington over the middle. Dart did everything the coaches asked of him and was extremely efficient. The preseason has been a great start to his career thanks to the great play-calling and game-planning by the staff.

Dan Salomone: I'll go back to what Joe Schoen said two weeks ago in Buffalo: "We've got to be ready to play when September comes." The general manager said that in the broadcast booth after the Giants played their (healthy) starters in the preseason opener. They did so again this past Saturday night against the Jets, even after two lengthy rounds of joint practices in extreme heat.
"I like playing in the preseason," said 14-year veteran, Super Bowl champion and 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson, who completed an 80-yard pass to undrafted rookie Beaux Collins on his first throw of the night. "I like playing any time I get a chance to do that. Especially early on, you get a rhythm."
Wilson added: "I think what it does is it just gives you that confidence in what we're doing. We're doing it on the practice field as you guys have seen in how well we've practiced, but I think to translate that to the game, put a bunch of points on the board and to be successful. There's still a lot more room to grow. We can be way better, we'll be better and just as we continue to play and continue to get after it together, it's going to be fun."
With that in mind, the Giants had a target number of snaps for their starters. For example, as Brian Daboll explained, they wanted to get the inside linebackers around 20 reps. The head coach was asking between series to check in on the numbers, which led to some players like Bobby Okereke staying in longer.
So, will it pay off when September comes around?
"Time will tell," Daboll said.
Matt Citak: Heading into training camp, we knew the development of quarterback Jaxson Dart would be one of the biggest storylines of the summer. The Giants traded up in the draft to take him with the 25th overall pick, so naturally all eyes would be on the rookie signal-caller. Now it's only been two games, and as we all know, preseason stats don't actually count. Nonetheless, it's hard not to feel encouraged by what we've seen out of Dart thus far.
Dart followed up last week's strong outing against the Bills with an even more impressive night against the Jets. The 22-year-old's outing began with a surprise moment. During Russell Wilson's fourth drive of the game, coach Brian Daboll tested Dart's readiness by quickly subbing the rookie in for one play. Dart, who after the game admitted he didn't know if Daboll was serious at first, completed a tight end screen to Theo Johnson, who was able to gain 30 yards on the play.
"You never know when you're going to have to go in, so just part of the multiple things we've done with a young quarterback in years past, where I was before, and thought it would be good for him for a play to get in there and not know that he's going in there," Daboll said after the game. "He didn't know it. He threw a little screen pass for 30, doesn't hurt."
Dart then took over at quarterback on the next drive, where he proceeded to throw incomplete passes on his next two attempts. From then on, though, the rookie was dominant. Dart didn't throw an incomplete pass for the remainder of the night as he completed 13 consecutive attempts. He finished his night 14 of 16 for 137 yards and a touchdown, good for a 123.2 passer rating, while adding another score on the ground. While his stats look great on paper, the way he operated the offense and remained composed in the backfield was even more impressive.
"I think that I'm just trying to improve myself each and every day," Dart said after the win. "The quarterback room has played at a very high level. A lot of the guys in my room who I really look up to, so I try to continue to pick their brains. I'm in a really unique and cool situation right now. So I'm just trying to learn from them, learn from all my coaches. Whenever my number is called, I think that I'm just going to try to do my best. But I'm also just going to be the best teammate that I can be and try to push this team in the best direction to win."
