Shane Bowen relieved of duties; Charlie Bullen named defensive coordinator

CHARLIE-BULLEN

Shane Bowen has been relieved of his duties, and outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will take over his role as the Giants' defensive coordinator.

The Giants lost their sixth consecutive game on Sunday in Detroit, falling to 2-10 on the season. Bowen's departure marks another significant change to the coaching staff. Brian Daboll was dismissed two weeks ago, with Mike Kafka taking over as interim head coach.

Kafka then named tight ends coach Tim Kelly to fill his previous role as offensive coordinator.

Bowen was in his second season as defensive coordinator, a position he previously held for three years with the Tennessee Titans.

The Giants' next game is a trip to Foxborough to face the 10-2 New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. The team will then go on its bye in Week 14.

"I have a lot of faith in Charlie and obviously these decisions aren't easy and Shane's a good person," Kafka said Monday morning. "He's a good man. He's a good coach. Just the results just weren't where we wanted them to be and so Charlie's going to step up for us and rally the group. The defensive staff will rally around Charlie and put together a great plan. I got a lot of confidence in the room and a lot of confidence in our staff to do that."

Bullen, who has 18 years of coaching experience with 12 in the NFL, is in his second season as the outside linebackers coach.

Prior to the Giants, Bullen served as the outside linebackers coach and pass rush coordinator at the University of Illinois in 2023.

Bullen was the Arizona Cardinals' outside linebackers coach from 2020-22 after originally joining their staff as assistant linebackers coach in 2019. He also spent seven years (2013-18) as an assistant with the Miami Dolphins. Giants general manager Joe Schoen served in Miami's front office at the time before moving to Buffalo in 2017.

He entered the NFL after coaching for three seasons (2009-11) as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Iowa. He also served as a student assistant for two seasons (2007-08), working with Iowa's quarterbacks while working on his bachelor's degree.

Before attending Iowa, Bullen played quarterback at Harper (Ill.) College and St. Norbert (Wis.) College. He earned a bachelor's degree from Iowa in finance in 2008 and a master's degree in sports management in 2011.

Bullen is a native of Palatine, Illinois, and a graduate of Fremd High School. He was a high school teammate of quarterback Scott Tolzien, who later played for the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts.

Bullen and his wife, Megan, have three daughters, Elle, Berkley, and Nellie and one son, James.

"We're going to give Charlie the reins to go and make the corrections that he sees fit for the defense, whether it's personnel, whether it's scheme, whether it's communication, calls," Kafka said. "And so he's going to have to work hand in hand with the with the whole defensive unit to make sure that it's his vision on how he sees it. And obviously, I'll have my fingerprint on there as well and be there and try to be an asset for the group as well."
