Giants.com is counting down to the start of 2025 Giants Training Camp with 25 questions in 25 days.
7) What is the strongest position group heading into camp?
John Schmeelk: No position on the Giants' roster is stacked like the edge group. The Giants have four players at the position that they should feel comfortable starting against any opponent. Brian Burns is one of the best all-around edge rushers in the league. He can rush the passer with speed and power, and is very comfortable dropping into zone when needed.
Kayvon Thibodeaux just had his fifth-year option picked up and told media during minicamp that he sees himself as a double-digit sack guy. Now he just needs to show he can do it consistently. Thibodeaux has grown immensely as an operator with his hands to get to the quarterback and doesn't mind doing the dirty work of pushing the pocket and setting the edge to help his teammates make plays.
Chauncey Golston was an under-the-radar addition to the group in free agency, and he brings more size than the other edge players at 277 pounds. He can move up and down the line but can also be a good run defending edge setter on rundowns with his 34 ¾-inch arms.
Abdul Carter is the secret ingredient. We saw his athleticism on the field in the spring but what he can do once the pads are on remains to be seen. He showed the speed and flexibility to win around the edge in the Big Ten, but his ability to stand up behind the defensive line and blitz from there will give the Giants an easier route to get three of these edge players on the field at the same time. He also has experience playing a traditional off-ball linebacker role.
Tomon Fox is the next man up with NFL experience, and the Giants added Trace Ford as an undrafted free agent this offseason. No other position on the Giants runs as deep as their edge group.
