25 Questions in 25 Days: Sleeper players to follow

BLUR-25-QUESTIONS

Giants.com is counting down to the start of 2025 Giants Training Camp with 25 questions in 25 days.

9) Who are some sleeper players to follow?

Dan Salomone: Let's start with two players who might not be on everyone's radar – unless you followed along this spring. Safety Dane Belton and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt turned heads at OTAs, the former doing what he does best with forcing turnovers and the latter entering a crucial third year with the full confidence of 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson.

Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is stressing takeaways (see: the tale of the turnover chest) and said they will find ways to get Belton, who recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of his NFL debut, on the field in a crowded secondary. Hyatt, meanwhile, bulked up after having just eight catches in his sophomore season and looks to take a step forward in 2025.

Speaking of receivers, coach Brian Daboll called out the undrafted rookies as the Giants wrapped up the offseason program in mid-June.

"Our young receivers have done a good job," he said. "I coached receivers for a long time and we've got some undrafted free agents that have done a really nice job since they've been here of absorbing it and then being able to play fast so you get some type of evaluation of their skill set."

After the head coach spoke before the second-to-last practice of the spring, Beaux Collins and Dalen Cambre went out and grabbed touchdowns. The point of spring practices is to set the stage for training camp, and the young receivers certainly did that.

Another name to keep in the back of your mind is veteran defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris, whose offseason signing might have slipped through the cracks (as Matt Citak wrote about in a previous answer).

"There's a lot of growth left in him," defensive line coach Andrew Patterson said of the ninth-year veteran. "And he's hungry and he comes out every day to get better. So, I'm really excited about where he could go. ... Roy has a bunch of upside. I mean, he has not even come close to reaching his potential."

Similarly, the signing of defensive lineman Chauncey Golston can't be overlooked. The former Dallas Cowboy can play multiple positions and will be one of the players to watch once the pads come on.

The last name to file away is interior offensive lineman Jake Kubas, who got three starts (two at right guard and one at left guard) under his belt late last season as an undrafted rookie out of North Dakota State. He is one of those players who gets mentioned unprompted by teammates and coaches when talking about the state of the offensive line. General manager Joe Schoen said specifically that Greg Van Roten was "really good" for the development of Kubas and was one of the many reasons why they re-signed the veteran.
