Imagine Patrick Ricard in Giants' backfield: 'Exactly what the people want to see'

Start filing the trademarks now. Cam Skattebo and Patrick Ricard are going to make hay in the Giants' backfield.

"I loved watching him last year," said Ricard, who signed with the Giants this week after making six Pro Bowls as a fullback with the Ravens. "And I was just thinking to myself, I'm like, man, that guy has a lot of fun. And you can just tell by how he plays and the juice he brings to the team."

Skattebo quickly became a fan favorite as a rookie with his attitude and style. Above all else, though, he produced results.

The fourth-round draft choice scored seven total touchdowns in eight games, but a gruesome ankle injury took away half of an electric rookie duo composed of him and quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary took over from there as the Giants finished in the top five in rushing yards and scored the third-most rushing touchdowns in franchise history.

Imagine adding a true fullback to the mix.

"It's going to look like a lot of yards and a lot of touchdowns," Ricard said. "It's going to be just physicality all over the place. It's going to just be exactly what the people want to see."

Ricard will be a key cog as John Harbaugh rebuilds his machine.

Adding up the head coach's entire run from 2008 through 2025, the Ravens were No. 1 in that span in rushing yards and yards per carry, No. 3 in rushing touchdowns, and No. 6 in points per game.

"He's going to bring just that culture that he had in Baltimore in terms of being together, playing together, going through the adversities that a season brings," Ricard said. "Just being all the things that you want to see in a football team – smart, physical, disciplined, and I think that he's done it for 19 years.

"He's going to continue to bring it here, and I'm happy to be one of the players that's going to kind of just kind of show the guys what he wants, what he expects out of us. think that's the biggest thing is he's a great leader. He understands how to bring a group of men and make them one. And I think that's the biggest thing is that we can all understand that he is our leader, and as long as we do right by him, we'll be all right."

When Harbaugh packed for East Rutherford, there was little doubt he would be bringing his hammer.

"He's been in my corner my whole career," Ricard said. "He's believed in me. And as soon as I saw he got the job here, I was definitely interested. I even told him, like, look, if you were coaching a Pop Warner football team, I'm interested. You know, like I'm there doing something. I don't even know if I'm like the water boy, you know what I'm saying? As soon as he was interested in me coming here, I was all in. I was just ready to just sign the contract and let's get going."

While he would make a good Bobby Boucher, Ricard will be doing more than getting water. He has also been known to catch a few touchdowns, despite his 11 career rushing attempts in 132 games.

"I mean, that doesn't bother me at all," Ricard said. "I've been fortunate enough to play with so many great backs and so many great quarterbacks who can run the ball to where as long as I am blocking and we are getting yards and we're getting touchdowns, that's all I care about. That's all that matters. And for me, I've garnished the nickname Pancake Pat because I pride myself in how physical I am, the point of attack and pancaking defenders. I can continue to do that, that's all I care about.

"It does not bother me if I don't get the ball at all. Sometimes I'd rather have these other guys get the balls because they're just, to be honest, they're better. They're more explosive. They can run a lot faster than me. I'm 300 pounds. So, I'd rather have the ball in their hands and me blocking for them."
