Giants.com is counting down the start of training camp with 20 questions in 20 days.
14) What is going on at kicker?
Dan Salomone: A lot.
From 2017 through 2022, the Giants never used more than one field goal kicker per season.
In 2023, four different players attempted a field goal (including a punter).
In 2024, they used three.
In 2025, they needed four.
As former special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey once said, you never want to get on the kicker train because the destination is unknown.
Chris Horton, the current conductor of the Giants' special teams outfit, is looking to get off in Secaucus. The coordinator is also the assistant head coach. The title has added weight under John Harbaugh, who keeps a close eye on the phase of the game where he first made a name for himself in the NFL.
The Giants will have an entirely new kicking battery in 2026.
They signed Jordan Stout, a first-team All-Pro selection last season for the Ravens, to be their punter and holder. Snapping to him is Ben Mann, an undrafted rookie who played collegiately at Boston College and Yale. The Giants had also signed veteran long snapper Zach Triner in March but then released him on June 1.
A day later, the Giants released veteran kicker Jason Sanders, a former All-Pro with the Dolphins who signed with the Giants in free agency. It turned a three-man competition into a two-legged race between Ben Sauls and Dominic Zvada.
The former made all eight of his field goal attempts and seven extra points in the final three games last season for the Giants.
"I feel like this is preparation for training camp, which is where the competition will really heat up," Harbaugh said last month at minicamp. "The good thing about that is with Ben's misses they've all been left, if you've noticed. They've all been pushed left. It's the same exact miss every time. That's a good problem to have. He knows the problem with it from a technique standpoint. He's just got to lock in and fix it. He'll do that. I'm confident in it."
Zvada, meanwhile, is an undrafted rookie from Michigan, where he picked up numerous awards throughout his decorated career. He was a first-team All-American in 2024, two-time All-Big Ten selection (2024-25), two-time Lou Groza Award semifinalist, and the 2024 Big Ten Kicker of the Year. Zvada is Michigan's single-season and career record-holder for 50-plus yard field goals made (seven). In 2024, he converted 21 of 22 attempts for a single-season program record of 95.5 percent. Prior to Michigan, he made 34 field goals over two seasons at Arkansas State.
"He has looked good," Harbaugh said. "Same thing you've seen. … He's been consistent and done a good job."
