Fact or Fiction: Depth chart reaction; preseason preview

JASON-PINNOCK-FACT-OR-FICTION

The Giants.com crew is presented with four statements and must decide whether they are Fact or Fiction.

There were no surprises on the first unofficial depth chart.

John Schmeelk: Fact – I wouldn't consider anything on the team's unofficial depth chart to be a surprise. I thought a couple things were significant, but they weren't surprising. Dru Phillips already being listed as the starting nickel is telling in how highly the team thinks of the player early in his career. Seeing Isaiah Simmons listed as a nickel stood out to me, even though we know that is going to be his position on early downs. Ryder Anderson as the backup 3-technique defensive lineman shows how far he has come and his potential fit in Shane Bowen's system. On offense, everything looks exactly like I thought it would. Not much to see here.

Dan Salomone: Fact – We are legally obligated to remind our readers that these depth charts are unofficial and should be considered as guides, more so for the media than the coaches. With that said, can you believe so and so was listed at so and so?! No, there were no instances of that.

Matt Citak: Fiction – Nothing really surprised me on the first unofficial depth chart when it came to the offense or defense, but something did catch my eye on special teams. Gunner Olszewski and Isaiah McKenzie are listed as the first and second punt and kick returner, respectively, on the first depth chart, followed by Darius Slayton, Wan'Dale Robinson, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Ayir Asante. The preseason should serve as a good opportunity for some of these players to showcase their skills in the return game and possibly work their way up the depth chart ahead of the regular season.

The New York Giants hosted the Detroit Lions for joint practices ahead of Thursday's preseason opener.
