Giants claim 3 players as roster-building continues

ROSTER-MOVES-0906

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today continued building their regular-season roster, adding three players via waivers.

The newcomers awarded to the team off waivers are defensive back Adrian Colbert and tackle Jackson Barton, both from the Kansas City Chiefs, and wide receiver Damion Ratley, from the Cleveland Browns.

To make room on the roster, the Giants released wide receiver Corey Coleman and offensive lineman Chad Slade and waived safety Sean Chandler.

Ratley, 6-2 and 200 pounds, played in 13 games with three starts in each of his first two NFL seasons. He joined the Browns as a sixth-round draft choice (No. 175 overall) out of Texas A&M in 2018.

In his two years in Cleveland, Ratley caught 25 passes for 344 yards, the longest a 46-yarder at Cincinnati last Dec. 29 that accounted for his only NFL touchdown. He finished the 2019 season with 12 receptions for 200 yards, a 16.7-yard average.

Colbert, 6-2 and 205 pounds, has played in 27 NFL games with 17 starts – 21 games with 12 starts for the San Francisco 49ers in 2017-18 and six games with five starts last year with the Miami Dolphins. His defensive coordinator in Miami was Patrick Graham, who now holds the same position with the Giants.

Colbert's career totals include 72 tackles (58 solo), eight passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

He entered the NFL as the 49ers' seventh-round draft choice in 2017 (No. 229 overall) from the University of Miami. Colbert spent about two months of the 2019 season on the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad.

Barton, 6-7 and 302 pounds, has not played in an NFL regular-season game. He was a seventh-round (240th pick overall) draft choice out of the University of Utah by the Indianapolis Colts in 2019. He was released at the end of training camp, and signed on Sept. 1 to the Colts' practice squad, where he stayed until the Chiefs signed him to their active roster on Nov. 11. Barton was inactive for Kansas City's final six regular season and three postseason games, including the Chiefs' victory against San Francisco in Super Bowl LIV.

Coleman, who was Cleveland's first-round draft choice in 2016, joined the Giants' practice squad on Oct. 18, 2018 and their active roster one week later. That season, he played in eight games with one start and caught five passes for 71 yards and averaged 26.0 yards on 23 kickoff returns. Coleman tore his ACL in the first training camp practice last year and spent the entire season on injured reserve.

Slade was signed by the Giants as a free agent on Jan. 14, 2019. He spent the entire season on the Giants' roster but was inactive for all 16 games.

Chandler joined the Giants as a rookie free agent from Temple on May 10, 2018. He was waived on Nov. 5, 2019, signed to the practice squad two days later and to the active roster on Dec. 7.

In two seasons, Chandler has played in 29 games and totaled 20 tackles (15 solo), 1.0 sack, one pass defensed and two fumble recoveries on defense and five special teams tackles.

Former Giants linebacker Ryan Connelly, who was waived yesterday, was claimed by his hometown Minnesota Vikings.
