The New York Giants added to their defensive backs group on Wednesday with the signings of cornerbacks David Long and D.J. James.
In corresponding moves, defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris was placed on injured reserve and wide receiver Beaux Collins was waived/injured.
Long has played in 80 games (12 starts) since entering the NFL in 2019. The 5-foot-11, 196-pound cornerback was originally a third-round pick (No. 79 overall) of the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. Long spent his first four seasons with the Rams, where he played in 52 games with 10 starts and totaled one interception, seven passes defensed, and 77 total tackles (67 solo). During the Rams' Super Bowl LVI run, Long returned an interception for a touchdown in the team's Wild Card victory over the Cardinals.
He then went on to spend the following three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders (2023), Carolina Panthers (2023), Green Bay Packers (2023), Indianapolis Colts (2024) and a second stint with the Panthers (2025). Additionally, Long spent the 2024 offseason with the Giants before being waived during final roster cuts.
His career totals include 96 tackles (82 solo), one interception and eight passes defensed.
Prior to being drafted, Long spent three seasons at Michigan (2016-2018). He was named first-team All-Big Ten by the conference's coaches and second-team All-Big Ten by the Associated Press after breaking up nine passes with one interception in his final season. He also earned the first ever Defensive Skill Player of the Year Award from Michigan. During his time with the Wolverines, Long played under Jim Harbaugh, the younger brother of Giants head coach John Harbaugh.
Originally a sixth-round pick (No. 192 overall) of the Seattle Seahawks in 2024, James was waived as part of the final roster cuts at the end of training camp. He then signed to the Patriots' practice squad and was with New England for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. During that time, he played in one game and registered one solo tackle.
James began his collegiate career at Oregon. He played in 32 games for the Ducks from 2019-2021 and totaled two interceptions, six passes defensed and 73 total tackles (53 solo) before transferring to Auburn in 2022.
In his first season with the Tigers, James was named second-team All-SEC by the Associated Press after totaling eight passes defensed and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown, to go with his 37 total tackles (25 solo). He followed that up the next year with two interceptions along with career-highs in passes defensed (10) and tackles for loss (3.5).
Robertson-Harris had been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. The longtime NFL veteran started all 17 games for the Giants last season and finished with 35 total tackles (19 solo), three tackles for loss, six quarterback hits and one pass defensed.
After signing as an undrafted free agent, Collins played in nine games as a rookie last year. He caught two passes for 25 yards while also spending time on special teams.
