Practice Report (4/21): Veteran minicamp underway

JAXSON-DART-BOBS

Giants.com's John Schmeelk gives you a sideline look into Tuesday's minicamp session that lasted just over two hours at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center:

* The tone of John Harbaugh's first practice was immediately apparent. There was very little downtime with the pace high and transitions between periods short and swift. They maximized the time to work in each period well, getting in as many reps as possible. The groups would work until the bullhorn went off indicating the next period was starting.

* Music was not turned on until a team period later in practice. Given all the communication going on within the defense and offense, which I'll write about later, it makes sense to make that a priority.

* The offense wore blue with the defense in white, but the jerseys at practice were cut much more like game jerseys.

* It's always fun to see the type of drills that a new coaching staff brings to the field. Early in practice there was a long session of special team drills working on the fundamentals of kick coverage. Harbaugh, a former special teams coach, was seen very close to the gunners while working with assistant special teams coach T.J. Weist to observe the players' technique.

* The team went to position drills after the initial special teams period. The edge players worked on getting their outside arm up to bat down passes. Defensive tackles worked on their punch. Wide receivers drilled their footwork and acceleration and deceleration around cones. Defensive backs worked on moving backwards and changing direction. The offensive tackles teamed with tight ends on executing combo blocks and getting to the second level while the guards and centers did the same.

* As the defensive team came together to work as a group, defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson was easy to hear. There was a focus on all levels to move in unison according to the play called on defense and the look the offense was giving. Players needed to hit the right landmarks and flow to the right areas based on where the quarterback looked on a play. You could hear the defenders talking to one another before each rep to make sure everyone was on the same page.

* Kickers Jason Sanders and Ben Sauls combined to go 9-for-9 on field goals, with both hitting kicks from 30, 33, 36, and 39 yards. Sauls hit an additional kick from 45 yards away.

* After a session focusing on the run and play-action game, the next period was 7-on-7. Jaxson Dart started the period with a quick completion to Darius Slayton on the sideline. He hit Isaiah Likely between the split safeties down the field on the next play, but safety Tyler Nubin was in great position to make a play on the tight end if contact was permitted. On the next play, Jevón Holland came down quickly on a short pass to the right and would have been in position for a quick tackle. The defensive backs reacting quickly and closing in on short completions was a common theme throughout practice. Cornerback Paulson Adebo would do it later on after a completion to wide receiver Darius Slayton.

* Cornerback Deonte Banks played good coverage on a deep play, staying on top of it and knocking the pass away in the middle of the field. Likely made another nice catch, completing a difficult grab on a low throw.

* Dart finished the period by completing a pretty back-shoulder throw to Darnell Mooney down the right sideline for a big gain.

* During the final two passing-focused team periods, Dart showed off his mobility to navigate the pocket and scramble on a couple of plays. Wide receiver Courtney Jackson won on a deep over route with Dart putting the pass right on the money down the field.

* The defense had its moments with Roy Robertson-Harris, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and others finding their way into the backfield on a couple pass plays. Cam Jones had good pursuit to the sideline on a pass completed to a running back. Rico Payton played excellent coverage down the field on a pass to Isaiah Hodgins. Swayze Bozeman was in great position for a quick stop after a completion in the flat. Holland played good coverage on Darnell Mooney down the field over the middle of the field to prevent a deep completion. In the final team period, Paulson Adebo knocked a pass away to prevent a completion.
