2026 Spring Practices

Practice Report (5/29): What we saw today

CAMPBELL-PHILLIPS-BOBS

It was a perfect day outside for the Giants' sixth OTA at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Temperatures were in the mid-70s under sunny skies with a soft breeze.

* The Giants began with situational work: end of half and game situations. The offense tried to complete quick passes and spike the ball or just throw it away quickly to stop the clock if nothing was available on the initial play.

* The defense started fast in the first team period, with Brian Burns and Abdul Carter both getting into the backfield for potential sacks. Dru Phillips made a great play that coincided with the Burns sack, faking a blitz before quickly dropping back into coverage to prevent a throw from the quarterback in his direction down the right sideline. Defensive lineman Ben Barten had a pressure during the first series too.

* Competitive periods for the rest of practice focused on red zone work. Theo Johnson had the catch of the day on a pass from Jaxson Dart, who put the ball perfectly over his shoulder to the back right corner of the end zone on a fade route. Later in team red zone drills, Johnson made a leaping catch along the end line in the middle of the end zone. The referees ruled him out of bounds, but the offense insisted he got his feet down inbounds despite strong coverage from Dru Phillips, who had a pass break-up during on 7-on-7s on a pass intended for Ryan Miller and another intended for Isaiah Likely.

* Jameis Winston hit tight end Tanner Conner for a touchdown during 7-on-7's over the middle of the field. In the final team drills, Winston found Chris Manhertz near the goal line for a possible score. Winston also hit Beaux Collins for a touchdown, though it looked like Darius Alexander was in position for a sack before the pass was thrown.

* Dart was very productive during team red zone drills. Dart hit Malachi Fields on a slant for a touchdown. Later in practice, he hit Calvin Austin III on a similar route. Dart also connected with Ryan Miller for a score but it looked like the defensive line was in the backfield for a potential sack. Dart also threw touchdown passes on two of the final plays of practice, the first to Likely in the right flat after a fake handoff from shotgun, and another on a play-action pass to Collins in the back of the end zone.

* The defense also made some plays during that red zone team period. Colton Hood had a pass breakup reaching in front of a receiver. Kayvon Thibodeaux had a potential sack after getting into the backfield. Linebacker Zaire Barnes forced a throwaway after blitzing and forcing the quarterback out of the pocket. Art Green just missed an interception, breaking up a pass in the end zone. Darius Muasau closed quickly on a quarterback rolling out of the pocket, forcing the ball to come out quickly.

* There are four OTAs next week with three days of mandatory minicamp the following week, which will conclude the offseason program until training camp begins at the end of July.
