Practice Report (5/28): Notes from the sideline

THEO-JOHNSON-BOBS

OTA No. 5 wrapped up on Thursday from the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Temperatures were in the mid-seventies with constant wind and extreme gusts under bright, sunny skies.

* The kickers got their first taste of the true potential of the Meadowlands winds this spring. Jason Sanders didn't kick but Ben Sauls and Dominic Zvada combined to kick at least a dozen field goal attempts, the most in any practice so far in OTA's. On more than one occasion, a kick looked like it hit a wall of wind at the goal line before the ball almost halted in mid-air and was blown off to the side.

* In the situational portion of practice, the Giants worked on time management at the end of games. The quarterback had to either complete a pass to the sideline or throw it away. They also worked on the field goal unit rushing out for a kick before the end of the half as the clock ticked away after a play finished in-bounds.

* The offense and defense both had their moments on Thursday. In the first team period, Tyler Nubin knocked a pass away on a crossing route. But later in that same period, Jaxson Dart hit Eric Gray, who got past the defense for a deep 40-yard completion down the left sideline for a touchdown.

* Dart picked up where he left off in the second team period as he completed his first three passes. The first was a deep flag route to Calvin Austin on the right sideline. He then completed two passes in the intermediate level of the field down the middle to Isaiah Likely and Austin. Later in that same period, Dart completed the pass of the day when he hit Beaux Collins on a flag route to his right, threading the needle between multiple defenders closing on the ball.

* Ar'Darius Washington made a great play on a throw over the middle for a pass breakup. Deonte Banks had strong coverage down the field to prevent a deep pass for a touchdown.

* The defense put their stamp on practice at the start of the next team period. Nubin came down from his safety position and knocked a pass away. Brian Burns had what was probably a sack before Jaxson Dart rolled out and hit Darnell Mooney for a pass near the sideline. Nic Jones was a free runner on a blitz for a would-be sack. On the next play, a downfield pass was intercepted by Korie Black on the right sideline. But the offense got some payback on the next play when Jameis Winston hit Malachi Fields down the same sideline, placing a pass perfectly in the hole between the cornerback and safety.

* Chauncey Golston had a likely sack later in that same period. Jarrick Bernard-Converse knocked a pass away and Raheem Layne got into the backfield for a tackle for loss.

* The final period of practice pitted the offense and defense against each other in two-minute situations, with the offense needing to go about 70 yards for a touchdown in just over a minute with two timeouts. The first defense dominated. Arvell Reese and Dru Phillips were in position to make immediate tackles on short passes. Brian Burns had two potential sacks, while Kayvon Thibodeaux was also in the backfield on one of the plays.

* Jameis Winston got his group all the way down the field as he completed six straight passes, including two long throws to Collins and Isaiah Hodgins. Gunner Olszewski had a trio of short catches, but the defense stepped up once the ball got inside the 20-yard line. Ar'Darius Washington had a pass breakup, which was followed by Eric Gray making a short catch in bounds and the clock running out.

* The third defense was very aggressive getting after the football. It started with a near interception by Beau Brade before a forced incompletion by Art Green. Darius Muasau came free on a blitz up the middle for a potential sack. Khalid Kareem almost got to the quarterback, but Brandon Allen was able to complete a pass to Tanner Connor over the middle for a long gain. The drive came to a halt with what would have been a sack by Caleb Murphy and pass breakups by Brade and Layne.
