Practice Report (5/27): Notes from the sideline

CHRIS-MANHERTZ-BOBS

The Giants 4th OTA took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center under overcast skies and temperatures around 80 degrees.

* It was a monster day for the defense, getting their hands on a lot of passes throughout the day. Jason Pinnock grabbed a pair of interceptions, jumping in front of receivers on both routes. His second interception came during low red zone drills, getting in front of the receiver on the sidelines.

* On Pinnock's first interception, Brian Burns may have had a sack before the pass was thrown. A few plays later, Burns would have had a play at the line of scrimmage for a loss or no gain setting the edge against the run.

* Arvell Reese had a pair of impressive blitzes, one coming up the middle and the other around the edge. His ability to explode forward and the speed he generates is impressive. Kayvon Thibodeaux had a pressure, as did Khalid Kareem and Beau Brade. Elijah Campbell and Zaire Barnes combined for a tackle for loss.

* Dru Phillips grabbed an interception of his own during practice. He also made a good play, coming up on a short pass caught by Tyrone Tracy Jr., which would have been a tackle for a short or no gain.

* Jarrick Bernard-Converse made the best catch of the day on his interception. He went airborne and used one hand to help pluck the ball before he controlled it with two on a pass that was going over his head and would have been a big gain.

* Art Green, Elijah Campbell, Bernard-Converse, and Korie Black also had pass breakups. Ar'Darius Washington nearly came up with an interception on a pass over the middle.

* Despite all the great plays by the defense, defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson was locked in on the details on every play. If a player missed an assignment, he was on them immediately. If substitutions were not sharp, people heard about. Even if a player made a great play earlier in practice, if he made a mistake a couple plays later, he was pulled off the field.

* The offense made some plays of their own. Jaxson Dart hit Calvin Austin down the middle of the field between a safety and cornerback for a long gain. A couple plays later, Dart hit Austin again on a deep flag route as he dropped it right over the head of the cornerback for a long completion.

* Running backs Eric Gray and Damon Bankston both had potential touchdowns in the low red zone drills. Gray caught a short pass in the flat and ran it in and Bankston ran a pitch play right in for a score.

* The situational work focused on catching a pass, getting to the ground, and then quickly getting to the line and spiking it.

* Kickers Jason Sanders and Dominic Zvada combined for 10-10 on field goals, with both making kicks from 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 yards.
