2026 Spring Practices

Practice Report (5/20): What we learned today

KAYVON-THIBODEAUX-BOBS

The Giants had their second OTA at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Wednesday. They practiced for two hours under bright skies and temperatures in the 90's. There was much less of a breeze today compared to the first OTA on Tuesday.

* Calvin Austin III stole the show for the offense on Wednesday. On the first day of practice, Austin got free in the secondary running across the field on an over route and caught a pass from Jaxson Dart that would have gone for a huge gain. Abdul Carter got into the backfield but Dart got the ball out before the play was blown dead. Austin also caught a screen pass and bobbed and weaved through the defense for what would have been a huge gain of at least 30 yards.

* Dart also got the ball out to Austin against a Dennard Wilson pressure package, hitting a slant after Austin beat press man coverage. With no safety help on that particular play, it could have been a big gain. Dart did a nice job getting the ball out quickly today and the offensive line gave him space to operate in the backfield. Auston caught several other short passes throughout practice.

* Even though Austin III had more production, it was tight end Isaiah Likely that had the top highlight of practice. Dart went to Likely and his pass was a little high, but the tight end helped his quarterback by leaping into the air and plucking the ball out of the sky with one hand. It was a spectacular catch.

* Dart made a couple of other plays during practice, threading the needle to Gunnar Olszeski between defenders near the numbers. He went to Gunnar later in the same period, hitting him perfectly in stride over the middle on a crossing pattern for a big gain during 7-on-7's. On the next play, he squeezed a ball to Malachi Fields in a hole between zone defenders on the left sideline.

* Jameis Winston hit Theo Johnson on a deep flag route down the right sideline but there was an inadvertent whistle before the play and half the defense wasn't moving full speed on the play. Winston would later hit Johnson on a crosser over the middle at the goal line for a touchdown from the high red zone. Later in the same period, Winston hit Eric Gray down the sideline on a wheel route for a touchdown.

* Kayvon Thibodeaux had an active practice, getting around the quarterback a couple times and showing a quick spin move to get after the quarterback. He also closed quickly on a couple of plays on short passes and was in the right spot to stop a quarterback scramble.

* Jason Pinnock had a pass break-up on a pass to Theo Johnson down the seam, knocking the ball way. Darius Muasau did a good job carrying Johnson down the field in coverage. Chauncey Gholston and Brian Burns got into the backfield on pass plays. Jarrick Bernard-Converse had strong coverage on a pass intended for Isaiah Hodgins. Greg Newsome II knocked the ball away on a deep fade route near the sideline. Dru Phillips what would have been a tackle for loss.

* Late in practice, a pass deflected off the hands of a running back in the flat and popped right into the hands of cornerback Rico Payton, who returned it for a would-be touchdown. Payton had a pass break-up a few plays earlier.

* Two things I noticed on defense. Early in practice, Tyler Nubin called over to Brian Burns after the first defense came off the field, and ran over to talk about some aspect of the defense. It was good to see communication with the players working things out together on the field. Everyone is in a new scheme and they are learning it as more is installed throughout the spring.

* The final OTA of the week and third of the year is tomorrow afternoon.
