Practice Report (5/19): Notes from the sideline

ABDUL-CARTER-BOBS

The Giants had their first organized team activity (OTA) of the Spring on Tuesday afternoon at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. It went a full two hours under bright, sunny skies with temperatures nearing 100.

* John Harbaugh has stated the team will do a lot of situational work throughout the offseason so they are ready to correctly manage games in the regular season. Today they focused on the offense running the clock out and making sure to keep the clock running and not going out of bounds on offense.

* A couple of rookies stood out during practice. Colton Hood played strong coverage on his side of the field with a pair of forced incompletions. He is excellent at playing with leverage to limit the wide receiver's space near the sideline. He had a leaping deflection of a pass inside the red zone to prevent a completion and the entire defense cheered when he broke out his signature hoodie celebration.

* Rookie Malachi Fields had a highlight of his own that mirrored a lot of the types of catches we remember from him in college. He jumped near the sideline and reached up with one hand to pluck the ball out of the air for the reception on a pass from Jaxson Dart.

* The best throw of practice came from Jameis Winston, who put a perfect pass on a deep out to Beaux Collins in the hole between the safety and cornerback towards the sideline. Dart also had an excellent throw over the middle on a skinny post to Collins. The second-year quarterback threw a number of back-shoulder passes throughout practice as he builds chemistry with his new wide receivers. Rico Payton had a pass breakup on one of those attempts.

* Greg Newsome had a pass breakup on a pass over the middle, knocking the ball away before it could reach Theo Johnson down the seam during 7-on-7.

* Abdul Carter was a star of practice as he used his elite speed, quickness, and athleticism to get into the backfield to disrupt the Giants offense on multiple occassions. His bend is impossible to miss.

* The offense drew the defense offsides a couple of times during practice and worked on a number of plays for the quarterback to get on the move off of play action.

* Tyrone Tracy and Calvin Austin had nice reaching grabs near the sideline, extending their arms to bring in the football.

* There is no contact to really judge offensive line play, but it was fun to see Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa run downfield after a completion, which would have given him a chance to throw some blocks in a game situation.

* Dru Phillips put himself in position on an outside run play to force the back inside as he set the edge nicely.

* Elijah Campbell nearly came down with an interception on a pass in the middle of the field.

* Darius Alexander batted a pass near the line of scrimmage. Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Chauncey Gholston were all spotted in the backfield on different plays.

The New York Giants opened OTAs on Tuesday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.
