Presser Points: Preparing Jaxson Dart for first road start

BRIAN-DABOLL-PRIMEPOINT

After notching their first win of the season, the New York Giants (1-3) look to make it two in a row when they travel to face the New Orleans Saints (0-4) in Week 5.

To preview the matchup, Brian Daboll met with reporters for his usual Wednesday press conference before practice. The big news at this point last week was the quarterback change to Jaxson Dart. This time, the conversation was still largely about the rookie, but now the next challenge is making his first career road start at the Caesars Superdome.

Here is everything you need to know from the presser:

đź“° Tracy is "getting closer" after suffering the injury in Week 3 and missing Sunday's win over the Chargers.

đź“° Daboll said the Giants did not have to pull back Dart in terms of reps at practice.

đź“° Saints coach Kellen Moore is a "fast riser in our profession" and was an "outstanding" quarterback at Boise State. Moore finished his collegiate career with a record of 50-3, the most wins by a quarterback in NCAA history. Moore entered the coaching ranks in 2018, taking over as the Cowboys' quarterbacks coach and then offensive coordinator for the next four years. He then went on to run the offenses for the Chargers (2023) and Eagles (2024), helping the latter to a Super Bowl title before taking over the Saints.

"I've known Kellen for a little bit. Really good man. Good football coach. He's had his team competing hard. They've had three games, I'd say very competitive games. One game that got away from them in Seattle. But three competitive games."

đź“° Daboll has known Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler since he recruited him out of high school while he was the offensive coordinator at Alabama in 2017. "One of the top recruits in the country. Timing, rhythm passer, accurate and has good athleticism. Can make plays with his legs. Run him on some runs. He's good on scrambles."

đź“° Daboll is also familiar with rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, the second-round draft choice who is second on the depth chart. "I think he's a good player, has good athleticism. He has his own story and his own journey, but I had good visits with him leading up to the draft. I think very highly of him."

đź“° Five-time Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara is "dynamic in every sense of the word" and can "take it the distance." The game starts with him. "All hands on deck. He can take it. He can cut one way and cut all the way back. He's such a skillful player and fast and has good vision. We need population to the ball."

đź“° On receivers like Jalin Hyatt and Beaux Collins having a larger opportunity with Malik Nabers out for the rest of the season: "Those guys have been working hard. They're out here for a reason. I expect them to know what to do and go out there and do it at the highest level they can do it."

đź“° Communication is a major emphasis this week heading into a loud environment, especially with a rookie quarterback. "From getting the play in, to Jaxson communicating to whatever snap counts we choose to use relative to how the sounds are there, which is usually loud. You simulate it and try to do the best you can here at practice, but it's definitely one of the keys in terms of being able to communicate and operate and stay on track and eliminate some of the pre-snap things that when you play in a dome stadium that's loud like this. So, we're going to work at it out here, blasting it as loud as we can, and just make sure we're on point with our communication."

đź“° Outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux has "been a pro since he's been here" and is off to a "good start" this season. "I think [outside linebackers coach] Charlie Bullen has done a really good job with him, but give credit to the player of how he approaches things, the way he practices, how he studies tape, his effort on game day, his unselfishness to play different spots for us."

đź“° Cornerbac Deonte Banks "did a nice job" with the first two kickoff returns of his career on Sunday. He averaged 27.0 yards per return with a long of 33 yards. "It's something we've been working on with him for a while."

đź“° With Tracy out, the Giants dressed only two running backs in Week 4. Dante Miller is always candidate to be called up from the practice squad and was the Show Team Player of the Week "for his efforts and the things that he's been doing."

đź“° Brian Burns' being tied for the NFL lead in sacks through four weeks isn't surprising because he has shown it every day on the practice field. "He's had a really good camp. I just remember showing a bunch of clips with him over and over every day of this is the type of effort and the standard that we need to play with, and we're going to need to continue to get that from him. He gives everything he has every game he's out there. He's a talented player, and again, we need him to be that way for us."
