Fact or Fiction: Giants' 2025 summer superlatives

RUSSELL-WILSON-FACT-OR-FICTION

The Giants.com crew is presented with four statements and must decide whether they are Fact or Fiction.

QB Russell Wilson has been the most impressive offensive veteran this summer.

John Schmeelk: Fiction – I am going to go with Jermaine Eluemunor. No one has consistently faced as many difficult matchups during camp this year than the right tackle, yet somehow he has also been the most consistent player on the field for the offense. He has stood up well against Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux in both 1-on-1 and team drills. For the first time in his career, Eluemunor has been able to focus on just one position and it looks like it has paid off. I have full confidence he is going to be a high-level starter for the Giants this season and, if he plays like he did in August, will have a chance to make the Pro Bowl for the first time.

Dan Salomone: Fact – There has been a lot of talk about leadership and intangibles with Wilson and other veteran additions, but let's not overlook that they need to produce results. And there's no reason to think Wilson won't do that while elevating everyone around him.

Matt Citak: Fact – Wilson has been fantastic for the Giants since arriving in East Rutherford, both on and off the field. On the field, Wilson instantly raised the floor of the offense with his arm strength and accuracy. He's connected on countless moonballs in practice, and we have begun to see them show up in games. Off the field, every single one of his teammates has raved about the veteran's leadership. Wilson is making a tremendous impact on everyone in the locker room, regardless of their position. Wilson is the easy choice here.

OLB Brian Burns has been the most impressive defensive veteran.

John Schmeelk: Fact – Everything Brian Burns has done on the field and from a leadership standpoint this offseason makes me feel like this could be his breakout season. Few players have been more consistent than Burns, who has had between 7.5 and nine sacks in five of his six NFL seasons. He did finish with 12.5 sacks in 2022. I anticipate 12 sacks to be the minimum he will get this year, with a chance to be closer to 15. He has talked about working with Dexter Lawrence to utilize his length and power more, and with teams having to pay attention to everyone else too, Burns should see fewer double teams. Perhaps the biggest factor in Burns' success will come down to the offense, which I believe will be more productive and generate more leads. It should then allow the pass rush to go to work late in games.

Dan Salomone: Fact – He might have been the most impressive player, period. If you want your defense to have an edge (in a positive way), Burns is the prime example. Coach Brian Daboll shows a couple of clips of Burns "almost every day of what he's doing at practice and the standard that he's creating for not just his position room, for the entire team to see."

Matt Citak: Fact – While Wilson might be the clear choice on the offensive side of the ball, Burns deserves that honor for the defense. The outside linebacker is on a mission to take his game to another level, as he told the media last week. Well, if you were to watch him at practice every day, you would see that he's taking that mission very seriously. Burns is practicing at 100 percent each and every day. The veteran is leading by example, which is significant with the presence of rookie Abdul Carter in the outside linebacker room. Burns could be well on his way to his second career double-digit sack campaign this year.

QB Jaxson Dart has been the most impressive young player.

John Schmeelk: Fiction – I don't know how this answer can be anyone but Abdul Carter. Carter might be the player that has been most difficult to block for Giants offensive linemen this summer. His burst, quickness and flexibility has allowed him to work around and under offensive linemen on his way to the quarterback. He has also flashed a power quotient that will force offensive linemen to honor his bull rush, which will allow his speed and quickness to be even more effective. He has also shown the willingness and aptitude to line up from multiple spots on his way to the quarterback, which will make it more difficult for opponents to plan for him. I see no reason he shouldn't be able to close in on double-digit sacks as a rookie.

Dan Salomone: Fact – Brian Daboll, Mike Kafka and company have put the 25th overall pick on a deliberate development plan, some of which we get to see and hear on the outside – and some we don't. He has seemingly checked every box, from earning the respect of his teammates to producing in live situations.

Matt Citak: Fiction – Dart has undoubtedly looked impressive, especially in the two preseason games. But the spotlight being put on him is due in part to the position he plays, and rightfully so considering it's the most important in sports. But to me, the most impressive young player this summer has been Abdul Carter. The rookie outside linebacker has looked explosive, getting into the backfield and into the face of the quarterback on a daily basis. He shined in the preseason opener with three pressures on three pass rush snaps and picked up another pressure on five pass rush snaps against the Jets. I can't wait for Carter and the rest of the Giants' pass rush to be fully unleashed Week 1 in Washington.

The play of the summer – in preseason or practice – was Wilson's 80-yarder to WR Beaux Collins against the Jets.

John Schmeelk: Fact – The training camp play where a defensive back knocked the ball up into the air, only to have it fall right into Wan'Dale Robinson's hands while he was laying on the ground would be my other options. But the luck involved and the fact it happened in practice make it inferior to the Wilson-Collins 80-yard bomb. The reason that was the play of the summer is simple. It demonstrates what the offense might look like in the regular season. Wilson still throws a great deep ball and I would expect him to utilize it often. What I liked most about that play was Wilson's willingness to throw it before Collins cleared the deep safety. Wilson was releasing the ball as he saw the safety take a bad angle towards Collins, anticipating Collins would run past him. It is exactly what happened, and Collins ran under the ball for the deep catch.

Dan Salomone: Fact – Piggybacking off Schmeelk's point, the best part was what it means for things to come. "To be able to take the practice all week where we had a good week of practice and then come out in the game and put up 31 points and do all the things we were able to do and make some really big explosive plays, I mean that's the exciting thing for us," Wilson said after the game. "The good part is we don't even have Malik Nabers out there yet."

Matt Citak: Fact – You could take your pick of which Wilson moonball deserves to be called the play of the summer, as the veteran has thrown plenty of them since the start of training camp. But since the one to Collins occurred in a game and was the first that most Giants fans got to witness, we're going with that. Wilson threw a perfect ball 54 yards down the field, dropping it right into the arms of Collins, who took it another 26 yards all the way down to the goal line. Again, we've seen Wilson do this nearly every day at practice. While it was great to see it in a game, it was far from surprising. I know it's a big change from recent years but get ready to see plenty of moonballs, Giants fans.
