Days. Weeks. Games.

The second of anything is always critical for NFL head coaches. It's when they want to see the most distance gained from one to the next.

The Giants are at that point in training camp. They opened the second week on Monday, which coincided with the first day in full pads.

"The second week should be where you cover the most miles, gain the most ground," Harbaugh said after practice at The Greenbrier Performance Center in West Virginia. "We want to put the most miles behind us as far as developing the foundation of our team this week. This is just a go-to-work week."

To help his team grow further, Harbaugh dialed up a steady rain in White Sulphur Springs.

"Tom Reed used to always tell us every single day, rain, sleet, snow, hot, it's a great day for football – every day," Harbaugh said about his former coach at Miami of Ohio. "We'd look at each other, really not that great a day, but he would say every day is a great day for football. And that was kind of a little bit of the theme out here. I mean, it's raining pretty good. And the guys are out there dealing with the elements, obviously impactful, but we'll have to play in that at some point in time. So, we got a good day in the rain, and that was positive."

Here are the top plays and moments from the day:

Takeaways

The defense notched two interceptions on Monday. Inside linebacker Micah McFadden grabbed the first, securing a ball that cornerback Deonte Banks first deflected and nearly intercepted himself.

Safety Jevón Holland came down with the second after taking advantage of a pass that slipped out of the quarterback's hand during a steady rainstorm.

Banks almost made it three but couldn't come down with the ball near the goal line late in practice.

Arvell shines in rain

Spring practices made everyone hungry to see the fifth overall draft pick when the pads came on. Today was that day, and the Ohio State product did not disappoint. Reese sniffed out a few plays against both the run and pass, in addition to notching a would-be sack.

"Very encouraged," Harbaugh said about the rookie. "I think he looked good today from what I could see. I can't wait to see the tape, but he's playing really well. He's been playing well the whole camp since he got here. … You see the talent, obviously. I think he's very sharp for a first-year guy. He gets things right pretty much all the time, makes very few mistakes. He's a very serious-minded guy, and he's very determined. I mean, he's doing things well."

Reese was one of the highlights during a dominant day for the defense.

"I thought the defense probably got the better of the offense today up front," Harbaugh said. "We'll see it on tape, probably going to be the case. But we got a few plays out in the run game on offense, too, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it."

Catch(es) of the day

Wide receiver Dalen Cambre made a circus catch and somehow came down with a Jameis Winston pass that looked like the defender nearly intercepted down the sideline. Rookie Malachi Fields, a third-round pick from Notre Dame, also hauled in a 50-yarder from Jaxson Dart.

Best of the rest

In addition to the interception, Holland also made a play on the ground and thwarted a run to the outside, much to the delight of his defensive teammates.

Each member from the trio of outside linebackers – Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter – recorded what would have been sacks and possibly more.

Wide receiver Darnell Mooney hauled in a long pass from Winston during a two-minute drill.

Rookie linebacker Jack Kelly redirected a pass that was headed toward the middle of the end zone.

Cornerbacks Dru Phillips and Korie Black broke up passes.
