Touchdowns, takeaways & top plays from practice No. 6

JASON-PINNOCK-TICKETMASTER

Practice No. 6 is in the books.

Speaking of which, Tuesday's session filled plenty of notebook pages. So let's get right to the action:

Touchdowns

The action ramped up with 1-on-1 drills between receivers, tight ends, and defensive backs. Each of the three quarterbacks threw a touchdown in this period, starting with Jameis Winston's deep pass to wide receiver Darnell Mooney. Jaxson Dart later connected with Braxton Berrios, followed by Brandon Allen's touchdown to Xavier Gipson.

Moving onto 7-on-7, Dart threw a red-zone touchdown to wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. In that same period, Allen turned up the velocity on a touchdown strike through traffic to wide receiver Dalen Cambre.

During 11-on-11, Winston threw a touchdown to wide receiver Ryan Miller in the back of the end zone. The ref ruled him inbounds, but that call will surely be scrutinized in the defensive film room.

Dart threw two more touchdowns to tight end Isaiah Likely and Mooney. The former survived a slight pass deflection by cornerback Dru Phillips near the goal line.

Winston threw three more to wide receivers Jalin Hyatt, Isaiah Hodgins, and Cambre.

Dart also had a rushing touchdown late in a heated practice – in every sense of the word – but threw the ball at a defender.

"I think it's a 15-yard penalty for taunting, so we backed up the extra point and had to do it again," coach John Harbaugh said after practice. "Did you see that? That's how we handled it."

Did he say anything to the second-year quarterback?

"I think he understands that for the game-winning extra point, we don't want it to be a 50-yard extra point," Harbaugh said. "Do you think I need to say anything in that case? Pretty clear-cut, right?"

Takeaways

On the play before Winston's touchdown to Miller, safety Jason Pinnock grabbed the first of two interceptions for the defense on the day. Cornerback Paulson Adebo had another, also in the red zone, leaping up to make the play at the front-right pylon.

Adebo broke down the play after practice.

"In the red zone, you try to do kind of those rub routes, try to take advantage of the space and kind of mismatch and pick off you," he said. "So I was able to fight through the pick and then get my head around and go up and get the ball."

Reader all about it

An 11-year veteran with 128 regular-season starts under his belt, defensive lineman DJ Reader used his veteran savvy again today while showing he has plenty left in the tank. Reader stuffed one run for a loss that made everyone put a star next to it in their notebooks, and then he later had a would-be sack.

Reader spoke yesterday about being brought in to stop the run.

"That's the most important part of the game," he said. "That's one of those things I take pride in as a nose guard, especially – it's part of the game that everybody can get involved in. And that's what it takes, effort. It's going to take everybody's effort to build that wall, force things back inside to your bigger guys, let things roll up top to your corners who can tackle. It's one of those things that takes effort from everybody, and if you're bought in, you can stop the run."

Additionally, Reader feels right at home. He previously participated in two training camps at The Greenbrier with the Texans.

"Younger players probably want to be at their house and their apartment and stuff," said Reader, a Clemson product. "Me, being a little bit older, I don't mind getting away for camp. Honestly, I'm more used to this side of the country. I'm two-and-a-half hours [away] in Greensboro, North Carolina, where I'm from. Mom can drive down, come see me practice a little bit. That's always been enjoyable. And I've always just enjoyed my time at The Greenbrier. They've got a bunch of different off-field activities you can do. Fun, go to the pool, the falconry, all the UTVs, all that stuff. So, I've always just enjoyed being around – the staff is pretty nice. These people take good care of you. So, I like it here."

Best of the rest

Cambre showed his route-running skills multiple times and hauled in a few passes in addition to his touchdown.

Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds broke up a pass during a fourth-down situation period.

Dart drew the defense offside with a hard count.

"Well, part of the offense has a lot of elements of cadence," Harbaugh said yesterday. "I mean, that's part of it. Cadence is something that we hope to use as a weapon, so to speak. It slows the defense down and keeps them honest a little bit, but you have to work at it. There's got to be growing pains with that. If you don't work through it, then you're not going to get good at it. So yeah, it's kind of tough on the offense, too. They have to get used to it in a lot of different circumstances. Play clock's running down, we've got motions and shifts. They've got to remember a lot of things at the line of scrimmage in terms of calls and which linebacker we're going to or whatever it might be. And then you've got play count or cadence, things that you have to execute. So, all that stuff going together is stuff that you're working on."

At one point, defensive lineman Marlon Davidson lined up what would have been a strip-sack.

Cornerback Greg Newsome II broke up a few passes, including one at the goal line during 7-on-7. Shortly after that, Pinnock broke up a pass in the end zone.

Rookie cornerback Colton Hood, a second-round pick out of Tennessee, prevented a touchdown with a pass breakup in the back-right corner of the end zone. His (defensive) teammates cheered him on after the play.

Defensive lineman Darius Alexander batted a pass at the goal line late in the practice.

"He's a guy who's got a really good chance to be special in this league," Reader said yesterday about the second-year pro. "He's a big body. You don't see too many D-tackles that big, long arms. Still amazed that he went to Toledo. I don't know what people are doing in recruiting. He can play. It's important to me to try to help him grow and feed off his youth."
