East Rutherford, NJ – The New York Giants have selected Coach Andy Gonzalez of Catskill High School in Catskill, NY as the High School Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week for week 10 of the 2026 season.
The High School Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week Award is part of the Giants' continuing effort to support local high school flag football programs. Each week during the high school girls flag football season, the Giants will select one area high school head coach as the Coach of the Week winner. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, and contributing overall to their community.
In recognition of Coach Gonzalez selection as Coach of the Week, a $2,000 check from The Giants Foundation will be given to the Catskills' girls flag football program. Coach Gonzalez will also receive a certificate of recognition signed by Giants Head Coach John Harbaugh and will be honored at a 2026 Giants preseason home game.
Coach Gonzalez is the first ever high school girls flag football coach in Catskill's history and in just their first season they earned a Section 2 title. Not only did the Cats win the title, but they also defeated defending section champions Holy Trinity who had a 13-0 record before meeting the Cats in the title came. Throughout the Cats' first season of play, Gonzalez led the team to a 10-3 record with their three losses coming from top-ranked teams. Gonzalez's team was feared for their defense with 5 shutouts throughout the season, but their offense was just as strong outscoring their opponents 355-95. Their historic season ended in the first round of the State Tournament, and the Cats look to continue their momentum into the 2027 season.
While this was Coach Gonzalez's first year coaching the new girls flag football program, Gonzalez has been connected to Catskill High School since before he graduated in 2004. As a student-athlete in high school, Gonzalez quickly came to learn the impact coaching can make which is evident in assistant coach, Doug Lampman, who served as Gonzalez's high school basketball coach and mentor. Their relationship is exactly what they look to provide for their girls, an environment where everyone can be themselves while competing for a common goal. Gonzalez's support of the Catskill athletic community, which includes serving as a boys tackle coach and boys basketball coach, has made him a trusted role model to so many and is shown in the development of his student-athletes both on and off the field.
"In our first year, Coach Gonzalez has taken a group of athletes and transformed them into Section 2 Flag Football Champions, said Athletic Director Brian Smith. "After years of coaching boys, he tapped into his passion for flag football and developed a talented group of young women into outstanding football players. Throughout the season, the players grew tremendously in their football knowledge, dedicated their own time to studying film, and consistently rose to every challenge placed before them. Most importantly, Coach Gonzalez got them to believe—in themselves, in each other, and in what they were capable of accomplishing. That belief turned into confidence, and that confidence translated into success on the field. Today, we stand as Section 2 Champions."
