Touchdowns & takeaways from OTA No. 5

GRAY-GUNNER-BOBS

We're halfway there.

The Giants were back on the practice fields Thursday afternoon for their fifth of 10 organized team activities, otherwise known as OTAs. They will practice again on Friday, which will be followed by a media session with coach John Harbaugh and players.

Here is what you need to know from OTA No. 5:

Play of the Day

A strong and steady Meadowlands wind was the 12th defender on the field today, but Jaxson Dart powered through it with a handful of deep completions, including a touchdown to running back Eric Gray down the left sideline.

The Dart-Austin connection

With Malik Nabers out for the time being, wide receiver Calvin Austin III has made the most of his time with the second-year quarterback. Dart found the 5-foot-9, 162-pound former Steeler for a long completion during 7-on-7 drills, once again driving it into the wind.

"For a lot of the new guys here, that's really been [the result of] day-to-day communication," Dart said last week about the new receivers. "And they're just dudes who are just bought into the grind and into what we're doing here. So, it's been really fun each and every day."

Meanwhile, Dart's best throw of the day was a well-placed ball to wide receiver Beaux Collins through a couple of defenders during 7-on-7 work. He also showed some zip on a pass to wide receiver Xavier Gipson.

Takeaways

On the heels of a four-interception day for the defense, cornerback Korie Black followed up with the lone takeaway in Thursday's practice. The ball held up in the wind and the former seventh-round draft choice from a year ago came down with it.

The sack leader

Outside linebacker Brian Burns had at least a trio of would-be sacks, including back-to-back to end a two-minute drill. The Giants' 2025 sack leader was also in position to bottle up a run play earlier in the practice. Fellow outside linebacker Abdul Carter also had a would-be sack.

Arvell at it again

In what has become a daily occurrence, rookie linebacker Arvell Reese was in the perfect spot at the perfect time to line up a potential big hit after a completion to begin a two-minute drill. The defensive staff certainly can't wait to see plays like that all the way through once they get into a game setting.

"You saw it on tape or you saw it at the workout at Ohio State," coach John Harabugh said this spring about the fifth overall pick. "When you see it in person in your setting, it's more. … He is 6-4 plus, 240-some pounds. Yet, he moves like a smaller guy. He moves his feet. He can flip his hips. Very natural looking mover off the ball, which was something we saw on tape. We thought we saw, but now we saw it on the practice field, so we feel better about it, you know. Picks things up really quick. Very serious minded. Very diligent about the assignments."

Nubin!

Safety Tyler Nubin kicked off 11-on-11s with a nice pass breakup, his first of two on the day. The third-year pro and former second-round draft choice has caught the attention of his new head coach.

"Coming out [of college] he was a guy that everybody liked," Harbaugh said. "High draft pick. He looks good, too. He's leaned up. He's moving well."
