Practice Report (8/13): Notes from the sideline

LINE-OF-SCRIMMAGE-JETS-CITIZENS

The Giants and Jets had their second and final joint practice on Wednesday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Temperatures were into the 90s with high humidity under bright skies with practice running from 10 a.m. until just before Noon.

* Much like Tuesday, the early portion of practice featured four fields with competitive periods going simultaneously: offensive line/defensive line 1-on 1s and 7-on-7 drills between both offenses and defenses. Today, I watched the Giants offensive line against the Jets defensive front, while my colleagues covered the other parts of practice.

* The Giants offensive line did well against the Jets' pass rush, even with Jermaine Eluemunor missing practice due to the birth of his child overnight. Marcus Mbow stepped in at right tackle and did a nice job after an early challenging rep against the quickness of the Jets best edge rusher, Will McDonald. After 1-on-1 work, the Jets defensive line worked on games with the Giants offensive line successfully passing them off more times than not.

* Paul Dottino kept an eye on the Giants defensive line where they faced a staunch and talented young Jets offensive line in 1-on-1's. Kayvon Thibodeaux had a late win inside after getting upfield against Armand Membou. Brian Burns used a nasty outside spin to beat Olu Fashanu in their first of their two competitive matchups. Trace Ford snuck around Carter Warren's inside shoulder after initial contact. Abdul Carter won outside on a rip move against fellow rookie Membou. Chauncey Golston won on a counter inside move after initially rushing upfield. At the end of the period, they worked on pass rush games with the Giants twists and stunts giving the Jets line some difficulties in passing them off.

* During the red zone 7-on-7 period, the Giants were able to complete a number of passes, just like they did on Tuesday. Russell Wilson hit Beaux Collins on a fade router in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Jaxson Dart hit Lil'Jordan Humphrey for a touchdown on a back-shoulder throw near the sideline. The Giants defense did a good job getting their hands on the football, with passes knocked away by TJ Moore, Jevon Holland, O'Donnell Fortune, K'Von Wallace and a forced incompletion by Korie Black.

* The Giants defensive front continued to be impactful during team periods. Kayvon Thibodeaux burst into the backfield for what would have been a tackle for loss on a run play. Chauncey Golston had a tackle for loss and a potential sack on another pass rush. Roy Robertson-Harris got good penetration into the backfield on a play to disrupt the quarterback. Darius Muasau had a big hit in the hole on a run stop. Brian Burns got into the backfield for a potential sack. Paulson Adebo played good defense on Garrett Wilson throughout the day.

* The Giants offense was more consistent than it was on Tuesday. Jameis Winston made the first big play of practice, hitting an open Dalen Cambre down the right sideline for a deep touchdown. Russell Wilson connected with Greg Dulcich down the seam for what would have been a touchdown from the fringe of the red zone. Jaxson Dart connected with Beaux Collins down the sideline on a go-route for a touchdown. During red zone drills, Wilson hit Gunnar Olszewski for a quick out, and he ran into the endzone for a touchdown. Jonathan Ward ran for a score, and both Jaxson Dart and Russell WIlson kept the ball after faking hand-offs to the running back and ran in for scores.

* Practice ended with two move the ball periods with both first team offenses having 1:06 and one timeout from their own 32-yard line to score with the game tied, 10-10. The Giants got in position for a 61-yard field goal attempt by Jude McAtamney, but the kick was short. The clock ran out on the Jets offense before they could get in position to attempt to score.
