Practice Report (7/24): Notes from the sideline

JEVON-HOLLAND-CITIZENS

The Giants were on the field for their second practice on Thursday – increasing the length to one hour and 45 minutes but still only working in helmets, jerseys and shorts. Temperatures poked into the low 90s under sunny skies. Temperatures on Friday are expected to reach 95. All of the work was conducted in the high red zone.

Here's what I saw from the sideline:

* Practice began with 1-on-1's with wide receivers facing off against the defensive backs and running backs going against the linebackers and tight ends against the safeties. Malik Nabers made a tough catch on a ball from Russell Wilson down the left sideline while falling out of bounds for a score. Wilson also connected with Theo Johnson and Darius Slayton for scores.

* Jaxson Dart hit Montrell Washington, Zack Pascal and Bryce Ford-Wheaton for touchdowns during 1-on-1s. Thomas Fidone II made a great one-handed leaping catch on a throw from Dart for a score, and Da'Quan Felton high pointed a ball from Dart in the corner of the end zone.

* Jameis Winston threw two passes to Tyrone Tracy for diving touchdown catches; he also connected with Devin Singletary and Turbo Miller for scores. Tommy DeVito hooked up with Miller and Cam Skattebo for touchdowns.

* Tyler Nubin, Deonte Banks, O'Donnell Fortune, Micah McFadden, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and Ty Summers all knocked passes away. Bobby Okereke also had a pair of pass break-ups.

* Dart had one of the best touchdowns of the day, connecting with Jalin Hyatt on a back shoulder fade near the sideline despite tight coverage from Tre Hawkins. Hawkins would get revenge later in practice with an interception on the same sideline, getting his head around and playing the ball in the air.

* Russell Wilson had a similar back and forth with Dru Phillips, first connecting on a touchdown pass with Wan'Dale Robinson on a perfectly placed touch pass over the cornerback's head that Robinson made a diving catch on. On the very next play, Phillips stayed with Robinson on an out route and grabbed the interception. Phillips and Robinson will be matched up against one another for most of camp.

* Two tight ends got into the end zone during team drills on passes over the middle. Wilson hit Daniel Bellinger on a short crossing route, while Winston stuck it into a crowded zone with a well placed throw to Greg Dulcich. They would connect again later in practice when Winston had to step up in the pocket to avoid a rush from Abdul Carter. Winston and Dulcich have connected for three touchdowns in the first two days of practice.

* The defense also made plays throughout practice. Elijah Garcia and Kayvon Thibodeaux got into the backfield for what would have been sacks. Flannigan-Fowles and Summers got into the backfield for potential tackles for loss in the run game.

* Deonte Banks continues to play sticky, physical coverage on receivers outside. He is not leaving an inch of breathing room on many plays. After his pick-six yesterday, Nic Jones had a pass break-up and sack from the slot position.
